Smith & Wesson model 64??

What do you guys think?

I had been fostering an itch to buy a police trade in Model 10.
I still might, but I had not even known about the Model 64.
Seems to still be a fair amount of those available were as the model 10's may be getting to the bottom of the barrel.
I was thinking the 64 I would not need to worry about all the bluing being worn off since its stainless.

If you like fixed sights, the 64 is a great gun. I have the 2" round-butt version myself.

Model 65 if you like the option of occasional .357s. Either are good choices.

I like them except for the barrel,,,

I like them except for the barrel,,,
Even though I am certain they made some,,,
I've never had my hands on a pencil barrel model 64.

The ones I've handled all had the bull barrel,,,
And personally, I think bull barrel K-frames look awful.

Other than that they are fine fieryarms,,,
I can almost hear Jack Webb saying,,,
The basics, just the basics ma'am.

I don't own a model 64,,,
But I do own a nice model 67,,,
Man but that gun is easy to clean.

I am a model 64 enthusiast, if there is such a thing. I have two model 64-3's, both 3" heavy barrel/ round butt. Moved to the 64's after I got tired of dealing with bluing issues on the model 10's (and with blued guns in general). The 64 is really the same gun as the model 10 - just made of stainless.

Love'em myself.....what's not to like ? All of the goodness of the K-frame in good ole 38 special.....but less worry about the finish (far more corrosion resistant and much easier to maintain).

The model 64 has become my favorite S&W.....and my favorite hand gun, as well.

Arron, I used to have a Model 64 with the standard (pencil) barrel. I loved the way it handled, but it was unfired, with the box and papers, so I never fired it myself. Sold it off to a collector later on.

I agree about the "bull barrels" too. I've never warmed up to them either, they feel muzzle heavy to me. I've got a Model 13 that I like, but...it's still got that heavy barrel....well, you know. I really like the tapered barrel profile of the Model 15/67.

But, if someone wanted nice 38 and didn't mind, or at least could live with the heavy barrel, obviously a lot of people did, the 64 is a hard one to beat.

Love my stainless model 10 er...I mean 64.
The model 10 and 64 are identical except that the model 64 is stainless.

I personally think the bull barrels are better looking.
I have a 2" round butt model 64 named Henry. He sometimes goes by Hank when he is feeling ornery, like when he fires Buffalo Bore or Grizzly +p heavy loads. :D

Henry/Hank is my favorite gun.
Mine is a no dash with a pinned barrel.
With all the plastic in guns nowadays, I like to travel with my classic friend Henry/Hank and remember when gun making was an art and not a science.

I personally love the look of blued guns but, appreciate the ease of maintenance and longevity of care/cleaning provided on a stainless gun.

I highly recommend a model 64.
Do yourself a favor and get a model 64 and don't ever sell it.

I bought a nice pair of 4" Model 64s a few years ago for $200 each - good luck finding them for that now.

The 64 was the first handgun I was issued when I became a police officer. Wish I could have bought my issued 64 when we switched to Berettas. I have a 10-8 and the only difference is that the 10 is carbon steel and the 64 is stainless. Both are great performers.

For all those who like the feel and balance of the tapered barrels.....and don't like the heavy barrels for that reason.... try a 3" one. I don't like the 4" HB guns myself - they feel nose heavy and I don't really like the looks (too "snouty" as I like to put it). But, the 3" HB K-frames are a different matter. They feel much more balanced and look much better, too. At least, in my opinion.....and I'm sticking to it !

Well looks like I could not wait for the 64 ( Have a bid in still)
But I go into my LGS to pick up a Tokarev and a Star model B I had ordered.
What does he have on the counter. ( he knew I was coming)
A Model 10-6 in very very good condition. Looks like new to me hardly any wear.
He had $350 on it. So it followed me home.
I will post some images when I get a chance.

My eyes are too old for Smith's fixed sights. I can't even see them, basically. I've always preferred adjustable anyway. My model 67 (adjustable sight version of the 64) gets lots of range and competition time.

Ok well, Now it looks like not only am I the New owner of a Model 10-6
But my Bid on that Model 64-6 went through and it is on its way.
So the moral is be care full what you ask for. You might get two.:D

I did not really think I would win. I ended up getting it for $275
Right in my wheel house range. better price than the Police trade in Model 10's.

Here is a grab from the Add of my 64.

I will post more when I get my Mitts on it.

Your newly won 64 is newer than mine, you've got the upgraded cylinder release and the frame-mounted firing pin and still pre-lock, if the function, lockup and timing are good... I would say you got a STEAL!

I think if we asked enough people, we might be split 50/50 down the middle. For me, the four inch heavy barrel is -THE- fixed sight K-frame .38 to own. If someone forced me to choose either my 10 or 64, I would hem - then I would haw - and then I would stomp their guts out for even trying to put me in such a position.

I run the Uncle Mike's grips on them -- that's what you see in Spacecoast's top 64 for sure and maybe that is what yours is wearing as well. Now I grew up in the 80's and I currently have more Pachmayr in stock than Lyman does, but on my 10 & 64, Uncle Mike's all the way.

My 10 came to me with ridiculous "bluing loss." It had been issued to the Ohio DOC. So I have no worries about it's finish and I love the beat up look.

Can't find the best words right now to say how much I dig my 10 & 64! :D

I like that style too. That's a good thing since the model 10 I got also has the Bull Barrel.
Just so happens I am right in the middle of a big 38 special loading binge.
Imagine that.. Should have some fun with that 10 tomorrow.

My model 64 HB was my duty gun. It shoots like a laser beam. I still have it up in the safe. I will never sell that gun. tom.
