Smith & Wesson model 624

Howdy

I had been looking for a Model 24 for a long time, they are scarce as hen's teeth, when I came across this 624. I don't remember what the price was, but I grabbed it, not knowing if I was ever going to find a 24. I changed out the oversized target stocks that came on it for a pair of Magnas. I generally shoot fairly light 44 Special loads and I prefer the Magna grips for light recoil in a big N frame.

I usually don't go for Stainless, but this one is a delightful gun, very glad I bought it.

Bad steel was what I heard about some of the 624s. Turns out mine was in the Serial Number run that was suspect. Mine is AHC04XX. Mine came with the box, and it did have whatever tag was on it to indicate that it had been back to S&W and had been OK'd. I called them up and they verified the SN was one of the suspect ones, but when I described the box they said it was OK.

P.S. Yup, the rear sight is black.

Tom,
What happens if I send the gun in to Smith and Wesson and they decide the gun is unsafe and won't return it? What are the options?

Thanks

Thank You Drifwood Johnson,

I now look forward to your explanations and great pictures. You are truly an outstanding source of knowledge that I am pretty sure is appreciated by all board members on this great site.

My sincere respects and thank you that you take the time to pass on your experience and know how.

Regards

Outstanding find...

That's a great price for a fine revolver. With that luck you might ought to pick up a lottery ticket or two! :)

I changed out the target grips which are just too big for me. My 624 is a great shooter.

Looks great with those grips. Its Friday so I might just go ahead and play lotto, :p

This FFL kind of surprises you some times because they don't value the 3rd gen s&w, sigs, cz too highly so you can get some deals there.

They have a nice looking model 15-2 stainless that I was thinking about and an old .357 that was build as the pre model 19. Can't remember the model but for that they want good money.

Wow for that price I would of been all over that too. I will agree that the rear sight needs to be replaced, a black one looks better but for that price I would not leave it behind. I would not send it back to S&W, just give them a call and ask but if the cylinder needs replacing then your out of luck. Your still below cost on this gun so if a custom cylinder was needed then I'm sure a gunsmith could make you one.

No Model 15 was made in stainless but if it's shiny and reflective, it's likely nickel plated. And S&W revolvers got model numbers assigned to them around 1956-57, and in most discussions we could call that a "pre-Model 19" but a purist would refer to it by the name Smith & Wesson gave it at the time... the Combat Magnum. A K-frame, adjustable sight .357 Magnum.

Sevens,

By your description then the 15-2 is nickel plated because is really shiny.
And yes, they did described the .357 as a Combat Magnum now that you reminded me of the name.

"According to Skelton's ST article (10/85), here are the recall SN ranges for the Model 624 recall:
ADXXXX
AEXXXX
AFXXXX
AGXXXX
AHXXXX
ALVXXX (the “V” is not a typo)
N910000 thru N953000[/QUOTE]"

The serial starts with AH but it was check out by S&W and it passed. Thanks for the info.

.44Spl. is a great round - my 624 3" is one of my favorites. I was fortunate to get mine with the original box (w/"C" stamp), grips, & paperwork. I replaced the Combats with a set of Grashorn Stags & Tyler T-grip adapter, which fit my hands much better than the combat grips.
At $550 out the door, you are stealing that gun.

I'm a sucker for the .44spl and when its coupled a gun that can still be ccw'ed I'm even more of a sucker. that 624 is a beautiful gun!

I bought one when they first came out (big Skeeter fan). I can't remember what load I used, probably Keith's bullet with Unique and maybe 2400. I never shot it well altho I had a M-28 at the time that was a tack driver. Used a .432 sizing die. Anyway, finally solt/traded it, not missed.

In Northern Virginia I'd be absolutely shocked to see that 624 at any of the local gun stores or a show for less than $1,000.

And not at all shocked to see it well in excess of $1,000.

This is my .44 Special, a Smith 24-3 with a 6.5" barrel. That's one of the Lew Horton guns from the mid 1980s. I paid under $400 for it. Can't remember exactly when I picked it up.

A friend of mine got one of the combat models with the 3" barrel. He offered it to me when he sold it, but I couldn't afford it at $400+ at the time.

Last one I saw was a few months ago for better than $750.

550$
I would have had a hard time not cheering as I dropped the money on the counter. MAN YOU DID GOOD!!
5 years ago I spent 675$ on a 21 thunder ranch and felt lucky.
This summer I had it with me at a gun show looking for other grips and I was offered 1100$ for it.
Its one of those guns that no amount will get it from me.
I did pick up a 96 recently that I have had a lot of problems with new which keeps me buying older S&W's and staying away from the newer.

Ozzieman,
It was one of those things, I posted here for information on the gun and after a couple of replies it seem like a no brainer so I went back and put some money on it. Was not really looking for a .44 as it would be yet another caliber when I was actually trying to consolidate my modest collection into less calibers, not more.

But its a good find. I can always turn it into something else later on if I decide I don't like the .44 special. But I always say that and end up keeping it. :p

Once a 44 special always a 44 special, they are that special;)
The only thing that makes them bad is $$$$$$$$=ammo.
I reload so that's no problem but if you shoot a lot of big bore like I do you HAVE to reload.
I can always turn it into something else later
Not after you shoot it some, so make some money now by turning it around or face the consequences of being addicted to the 44 special for the remainder of your life.

Wow Mike, that looks beautiful in blue. Reminds me of the model 29.

The 624 serial number starts with AHB7XXX, can you tell me what the books says on it?

Thanks

Ozzieman,

you're probably right. Hopefully I can bring it home this coming week. Waiting to get paid for a gun I just sold. This is the second good deal from this particular FFL. I bought a model blue 19-7 4 inch barrel unfired but with a very slim circle line from being dry fired for 585 OTD a little over a year ago from them.

That one came with original box, manual too.
