Smith and Wesson serial number search

Thanks Jim. You are a wealth of information. The Lady Smith is about 95%, original finish; but, it is missing the small knurled knob on the cylinder release. Wouldn't know where one might be rolling around, would you?

Considering purchase of this piece

S&W 60-10 CDT57XX. It seems to be in remarkable shape. Any help with the mfg. date would be appreciated.

Question?

I inherited a S&W revolver. I believe it's a 3rd model 38 special. It's in pretty rough shape as far as looking at it but it does work. I was just wondering the age of this weapon. The s/n is 86xxx Thanks for any help, Sherman

The s/n is 86xxx
That SN was used on both 5 and 6 shot models but at different years.
So, if you took the SN from the underside of the frames grip butt and it's a six shot then it would be a 38 Military & Police Model of 1905 1st change. SN's ran from 73251 in 1906 to 146899 in 1909.
If it's a 5 shot then it's a Chiefs Special made in 1956.

.38 Military & Police Model of 1905, 4th Change.
The serial number dates it to around 1920.

Parts will not be easy to find short of buying damaged/worn guns for parts from that era (pre WWII).

S&W made allot of them so value is not real high, maybe $400.

BTW, S&W still makes that gun today (updated of course) as the model 10.

I couldn't make it through all 144 posts but this looks like the place to be.
First, thanks for the knowledge and my humble offerings wish the best to all.

Just purchased a model 37 that's in really nice shape but I can't find a source other than this one that can tell me what year it is.( besides S&W and a $50. donation.)

serial# BAF09XX

Thank you laytonj1
