Smith and Wesson serial number search

Any info on a S&W Mod 64-6, serial number CER57XX

2000/01.

Its a S&W .38 special, six-shot with 5 inch barrel. It has fluted cylinder, fixed sights, and checkered walnut grips. I believe its a M&P. Serial number is 4-digits starting with 40xx. Mine is identical to this one (see attached photo) except mine has 5" barrel, this appears to be 6". Mine also has a smaller/shorter hammer. I would really appreciate it if someone could let me know what model it is, what year it is, and if possible what it may be worth.

SN 40XX would be a first year production (1899) .38 Military & Police 1st Model.
Not sure about the hammer, a picture would be nice!
Value depends on condition, running $1K+ in excellent.

Model 25's are 45 caliber. Your serial number dates it to 1960 and is likely a model 14 or 15.

Thanks Jim, I appreciate the info. I have been on a bunch of websites saying it was from 1899, but I couldn't believe it. Condition is great and i'll get a picture of the hammer on here soon. I can't find anything similar to compare it to, but it is just shorter. It is actual hard to cock without some slight trigger pull for assistance.

I'd like to know the year, any interesting info (I can find a model 16 .32, but not a .38) and if +P ammunition will be safe with this revolver.

Serial number dates it to 1967.
Model 16's are only chambered in .32 caliber.
Yours with a 4" tapered barrel in 38 would likely be a model 15.

Unfortunately, your gun falls into that wide range that SCSW lists for the M&Ps: from 1915 (SN 241704) to 1942 (SN 700000). That's about 458,000 guns over 27 years - or about 17,000 per year, so interpolating would place yours around 1931, but that's only a rough approximation.

The numbers were kind of confusing when I tried to look it up. Do you know when the knurled knob on the end of the ejector rod changed to a plain tip? Mine has the knob, as well as the charcoal blue finish, and checkered walnut stocks with no medallions.
 
Murdock - The book doesn't mention when the ejector rod was changed - indeed, doesn't mention any similar types of small changes over the 1915 to 1942 period, except for serrated front and rear tangs being introduced on the target models around 1923.

The section on grips says the walnut grips with no medallions were used on square butt models only from about 1920 to 1929, so the latter part of that period is certainly consistent with the approximate date based on your serial number.
