Smith and Wesson serial number search

Caliber

Hello spacecoast,
I am sorry I left off the caliber it is .32 long and the Blue book puts it pre war, however I can't narrow it down to the year? According to the pictures that I have seen it should have hard rubber grips.................... Still need help guys!! Take care and God bless....cordell

i just got this revolver. it's a 4" barrel and is stamped with the INDIANA STATE POLICE logo on the right side of the frame. the serial# is: 52K97xx
would it have been manufactured about 1978?
Serial numbers ran from 25K0001 in 1978 to 56K9999 in 1979. I would say yours is likely 1979.

Cordell,
Your serial number 2799XX makes it a 32 Hand Ejector 3rd Model. Serial numbers ran from 263001 in 1917 to 536684 in 1942.
Heat treating on this model started at SN. 321000 in 1920 so yours pre dates that.
To get an actually shipping date would require a letter from S&W.
Grips would be black rubber with the S&W monogram or walnut with a diamond around the screw escutcheon.
Best place to locate grips would be Gunbroker and Ebay.

S/N request...

Well, thinking that someone has posted this question already I have searched for an hour and been unable to find it.

Ready to buy a Model 10-8 and wondering what year it was made. S/N 3D42xxx.

Thanks in advance. :)

I have a model 10-5 SN C858XXX. Any info would be appriciated.

1966 (starting at SN C810533 to 1967 (ending SN C999999), so probably '66.

Mod 17-3. Trying to appx date. 18Kxxxx.

1977

Ready to buy a Model 10-8 and wondering what year it was made. S/N 3D42xxx.

SCSW doesn't appear to list any SNs starting with "3D" - 1D, 2D, and 4D up to 30D, (and even D3), but no 3D. And there's no gap in the sequence of years listed where "3D" would fit, i.e., the list goes right from 2D99999 (end of 1978) to 4D00001 (start of '79). Mod. 10-8 was introduced in 1977 and replaced by the 10-10 in 1988, if that helps.

Model 66 (No Dash)

I just picked up a like new Model 66, no dash. The serial number is
4K61XXX am I correct in assuming this gun was made around 1970?

It has the stainless steel targets.

Thanks

Thanks FlyFish. That seems odd that there is no record. The number is stamped on the butt and is clear to read - 3D42xxx. Inside the number is stamped is MOD. 10-8. Also very clear to read. The barrel shows SMITH & WESSON on one side and 38 S.&W. SPECIAL CTG. on the other side. The gun is in good shape other than holster wear and a couple of numbers they etched/stamped on the side. Where do you suggest I look for more information?

686

I just bought a model 686 that I've been dreaming about for months. The # reads AAJ1XXX. Any help from you generouse fellas would be greatly appreciated.

kopsy: I agree it's a strange situation. Maybe someone else will jump in with an explanation, but we're all working from the same book and, unless I'm missing something, 3D just isn't there. Could be a typo, I suppose, and 1979 should really start with 3D instead of 4D, but I have no reason to believe that's the case. You could make a call to S&W and see what they have to say. My understanding is they're happy to give you the production date if you quote them the SN. If you do that, come back on and let us know what they say.

swsnub: late 1982.

Interesting. According to SCSW, only the models I listed were produced with SNs starting with a "D". Looks like another instance where the book might not have the whole story (or maybe I don't).

prehaps I am mistaken. I purchased it from Summit Gun Broker.

Side of the barrel is stamped 38 s&w special otg

EDIT
I'm assuming +p is a no no out of a non +p pistol such as this?

Look inside the area of the frame that's exposed when you swing the cylinder out - the model number will be stamped there. The M64 is a stainless version of the [blued steel] M10 - the basic, fixed-sight, .38 Special, Smith revolver.
