As a prefix it means Model. Sometimes they use "MOD" sometimes just "M" and other times no prefix at all.By the SN is, it has M629-1. What does the M mean? My buddy has a 629-4 and it doesn't have the M.

An exception would be the 581, 681, 586 and 686 no dash and -1 L frames. The ones that had the firing pin bushing recall completed were also stamped with a "M" (for modified) above or after the model number.
