Smith and Wesson serial number search

.38sp SN C939***. When is it dated to? Also, my Dad says it'll shoot .357 also. What about .38p?
First off, do not shoot 357's in it. They operate at twice the pressure and they should not even fit (too long). It was designed, chambered and marked for 38 special. You can shoot 38 +P.
SN dates it to 1967.

Jim

Does it say "Model 36" or Model 36-x whe you open the cylinder and look at attaching lug on the crane? If it doesn't it might be a pre model 36. How many screws does it have on the face plate? Can you send a pic? My email is mbliss57@yahoo.com
Mike

On the inside it says "MOD. 36" and the serial on the crane is 446XX.

Wow! Thanks for the fast response and the info. I was told by my Dad that it was ok for .357 and have seen others that were listed to shoot both that's why I figured it was ok. I'll definitely stick with .38 and .38+p especially since I've got a .357 Blackhawk and .45 when more punch is needed.

Since y'all were so quick with that info I'll post in the shotgun forum with a Springfield and Excel 20 ga. shotguns I'm trying to get info on.

Thanks again!

Hello All,

I am a first timer here and need help with the production date of a Smith & Wesson Model 10-6 that I have received from a family estate. The serial # is D352XXX. Just want to make sure it is +p safe and if anyone knows approx. value for good condition that would be great.

Many thanks in advance for any help :)

Best,
Adam

I've searched this thread for "28-2". I'm thinking based on the S serials I've seen dated, 1964 maybe for mine?

wow...I just noticed how many first time posters ther were here.

Hello...

Gary

Yes, a great thread for the newbie S&W revolver purchaser and happy to be here :) I am more into collecting auto pistols and C&R but have this one revolver. I believe the serial # posted will place this gun in later production but am looking forward to Jim, Hammer and other members' input.

Best,
Adam

Ok, got a 28-2 #N536396 Seems like a late model number to me, 80's manufacture maybe?

You're on the right track: N500000 to N600000 date from 1978 - 1980.

D330001 -D420000 date to 1971 - 1972. It is safe to use with .38Spl. +P ammunition.

Model 10s are almost as good as currency. Because so many were made values aren't high (except maybe in factory new condition with box and all accessories). On the other hand because they are so popular they are easy to sell. Ballpark value $300 assuming typical blue wear and handling marks for its age, but otherwise in sound operating condition.

Good guess! S236000 - S257999 date to 1964 - 1965

Thanks for the quick reply!! The years stated are the years that I bought them new. I was wondering though if they had been sitting in the store for several years before I bought them but now I know! Thanks again! MT

Still have my three S&W's

I lost a sweet Model 27 that I bought new back in 1985 (purchased in 1983) - still licking my wound over that. I also gifted a well-used Model 27 snub-nose to my relative -- should have gifted one of my Glocks -- oh well.

I still have three left -- and they are staying with me. I am curious as to the age of each -- got them used.

19-4 with 4" barrel -- I think it is unfired. 4 0K9 035

27-2 with 5" barrel -- N478449 -- shot some by me and the family members -- but still looks new

27-2 with 8 3/8" barrel -- N184760 -- bought on Gunbroker as new-in-box. It looks clean, but it has the line around the cylinder. I just keep this one in safe.

If someone knows, how old are these pistols?

39-2

I also sold a 39-2 to a real nice fellow -- A449579 -- got it from the same person I got the 27-2 N478449 from. Pretty sure they are both un-fired after factory. He was pleased -- going to keep it as a safe queen. It would be nice to be able to tell him the vintage.

I recently purchased a S&W Model 64-3 and would love to know the year of manufacture if possible.

The serial number is AFR6XXX

Thanks in advance for any help with this.
