V118709 would be around 1942/43.
It would be marked ' US NAVY" or "PROPERTY OF US NAVY".
i have 2 S&W revolvers 1 is a .22 LR 7 shot SN 128xx
the other is a .38 S&W CTG top break SN 233xxx
i would like to know when they were made also is there any danger in using modern .38 S&W ammunition

.38 Safety Hammerless 5th Model. Serial numbers ran from 220000 in 1907 to 261493 in 1940.
Modern .38 S&W ammo is safe to use.

It's simply known as the "357 Magnum" as it was the only one being produced during that time period. It's also referred to as a "Pre 27" and to a lesser extent, "357 model of 1950".
hi, i've ran across a very old revolver and have had absolutly no luck on dating it.

S&W reused serial numbers on different models, therefore, I need more information. Caliber, How many rounds it holds, Modern swing out cylinder or older break open, patent dates on barrel.
Serial number is C 103XXX.
.38 Military and Police. Went on to become the Model 10 when S&W started assigning model numbers around 1957.
Serial numbers ran from C1 in 1948 to C223998 in 1951.
Oil won't hurt but can yellow the ivory. A decent gunsmith can tell you if they are real elephant ivory.
