smith and wesson model 10

Jglsprings, like I had said previously I never knew the man and don't even know what he looked like, or read his book. One thing I'm very familiar with is the thinking of the NYPD and their policies that they made public, especially during that time period and I repeat the policies they made public. They are aware of lawsuits to this day.

All I can say is if that's what he did and got away with it, then that's fine, cause he obviously made somewhat a legend of himself. But from what you referenced from his book it appears that he modified his .38, with a .357 cylinder in order to fire .38's from it and not .357's. Now that's not like converting to .357 and firing .357's through it. What he apparently did was to work up his loads just below the pressures of the .357, which under those conditions was brilliant. I can see the city allowing him to do that! I think he was smart enough never to shoot .357's out of that gun. Your original post about Cirillo had me believing he was using .357's. Sorry for my mistake.

however, and with so much unknown information we cannot reccommend such a conversion as safe.

Where in the entire thread did anyone recommend the conversion?

So in answer to your theoretical question yes. But, for all practical purposes no.

The entire thread went straight into "how stupid" and "you'll shoot your eye out kid".

I know that you didn't specifically reccomend the conversion, but there are people who have the unfortunate habit of reading part of a post or article and thinking that "because such and such did it, so can I." These are the same kinds of people who blow up guns trying to duplicate Elmer Kieth's loadings because they forgot about balloon-head vs. solid-head brass or use a weaker gun. Because of this, I thought it prudent to point out the reasons that such a conversion would be unwise.

....with close to .357 power.....

Important difference......IIRC, Cirillo also swapped out his issue .38Spl ammo for Super Vels....a pretty hot load at the time. His mods were probably more for that than for shooting magnums.

I loved those Super Vels. They were probably the most beloved ammo in the late 60's and early 70's. That was powerful stuff and they're what I carried in my Browning HP for backup. I have enough I saved for over 30 years to fill a magazine, but just can't bring myself to shoot them up. I wouldn't worry about them still going boom. The old days were so much simpler.
