Single Stack Nines

I've been mulling getting a good single-stack 9mm. I like double-stacks fine, and love my Glock 19, but I'm far too cheap to spend huge amounts of $ on pre-ban mags. Plus pre-bans will just get harder to get, and I can't help but feel a bit cheated having to use a Clinton 10-rounder when I KNOW there's supposed to be five more rounds there. It's like being given a sports car with an automatic transmission.

I want to stick to the 9mm, because that's what I like. I'm not sure if I want something too compact. I tried shooting a SIG 239, which was a great gun, but I didn't do very well with it, possibly because I have fairly large hands.

Pistols I'm looking at include the HK P7M8, which I've fired and loved, a SIG 225, which fits my hand better than the 239, or a Walther P5. BTW, why are P5s so much cheaper these days. I remember when they were $1000 guns, and now I see them selling for far less.

(Or I guess I could save my $ and buy several of the "other" 9mm--the Mak. I love those guns! :) )

Any thoughts on the pistols I mentioned, or anything I might not have considered?

I'd get a SIG Sauer P225. They can be had NIB for about $550 (two summers ago they were at $379). You might have to search around. One good source is www.precisionarmory.com The P225 is extremely reliable, very accurate, and if it fits your hands then why not get it.

So many pistols, so little money.

IMHO single-stack nines are a good option. I have three and can recommend any of them: Beretta 92 Compact Type M, SIG P225, and S&W Model 3913 (pre-pact).

Of these three, my personal favorite is probably the Beretta, even with its relatively bulky slide. If concealed carry is a factor, the S&W would be my choice. I believe that the SIG falls between the others in size, and is an excellent pistol for all-around use.

HTH. :)

Even though it didn't fit your had very well, I would still suggest the SIG P239. Mostly because the magazines are pretty easy to find at the gun shows I attend. I've NEVER seen spare magazines for the Walther. Magazines for the HK are around but, like their weapons, they're pround of them. I've seen SIG 225 magazines, but they hold the same amount as the P239 (8 rounds) when there's space for one more. And if you can get the same amount in a smaller package, I would go with the smaller package.

But, as they say, your mileage may very.

I think the SW 3913 would be a strong option if not for Political reasons, and the existence of the Sig 225. If you get them both used then I feel that you would have to get the 3913 at an extraordinarily good price to pass up on a 225. That P7 is a very nice piece.

The HK P7M8 is a great gun, and is personally my favorite single stack 9mm... But... They sure do cost a lot now days NIB and even the used ones still cost a pretty penny... Spare magazines are also sometimes difficult to come by for the P7M8, since HK seems to distribute them is spurts. Given the above, my second choice would be the Sig 225. Also an excellent gun...

I have a S&W 539 (pre-sellout) ANIB for sale, only $300. It's in immaculate condition having fired less than 50 rounds through it.
Very accurate piece. - Dac

Single stack pistols fit my hand the best. I own 2 sig 225s and just traded my 3913 for a sig 239 in 40 cal. You really can't go wrong with any of these guns even the 3913 as I think it is the best model S&W makes. My favorite is the sig 225. The after market grips are too fat so I cut a piece of bicycle inner tube and roll it on. Works great. Can't go wrong with the 225!

The best single stack on the market today is the H&K P7M8. Number two is the Kahr M9. Number three would be the Sig 225. And number four is the S&W model 3913. You will not go wrong with either of these choices.

all of the Kahr series guns are great and easy to conceal. sig 225s and 239s are also good but not as small as the Kahrs.

if you get a P7 you might as well get another double stack and some hi-caps for the same price. they're several $100 more than glocks.

also the Glock 26 is a double stack but only holds 10 rounds. and it will accept your G19 hi-caps.

I would second the recommendation of Kahrs. At least look at one before you buy something else -- I find them to be one of the best pointing in my hand and one of the most practical concealment pistols available. The K series is easier to hold onto than the MK series. I've found my K40 to be quite accurate for its size, too. You can find them used for $425 - $475. Good luck.

Kahr K9,rugged,shoots +P ammo and easily concealable. I'd go with the Elite Model as it has a better trigger

The Berreta 92's mags are still cheap at 40 bucks or so. But all the guns you mention are fine.

I intend to go into harms way.

Of single stack 9mm's, the best are the HK P7M8, the Sig 225 (or possibly the 239), and the S&W 3d Generation (I forget which numbers). The Beretta is also nice, but hard to find the single stack version; in fact, you'll probably find high cap double stacks easier than the single stack. I've never shot the Walther P5, but I've had good luck with my PPK and P99, so I have no reason to believe it's not a fine gun.

Since you don't want 'something too compact' how about the best 9mm ever made, the SIG P210? SIG P225 is good and the new Kahr P9 deserves checking out. The P220 came in 9mm, but are hard to find, could also find a Browning BDA in 9mm, same gun. Colt Govt and Commanders were available in 9mm also. The H&K P9S in either the Target or Competition versions, they have an excellent trigger and are very accurate though the Competition will give the P210 a run for which gun can drain the bank account quicker.

Another vote for the P7M8. I know they're expensive, but so are Porsches. I never could muster much affection for the 3913, sold it after 6 months and a few hundred rounds. It worked, and the trigger was pretty decent for a crunchenticker, but I hate that grip. The Kahr is nice, though I don't have much experience with them. The 225 seems like your best bet if you can't spend the money for HK, but it is a little bulkier than perhaps it ought to be.

I bought the SW 3913 recently and am very pleased w/ it. I would have bought the Sig225 but I've got a 3yr old and wanted the safety on the SW.
When I went to buy it, I had the dealer lay out a G26,Kahr K9, Sig225, Baby Eagle, and the SW. All were good pistols. I liked the SW the least, but it was single stack, slim, and had the safety, so I bought it.
I demand that my carry gns be dependable and accurate, now matter how much I like their looks. Form must follow fuction in a carry piece. I have been very pleasantly surprised in the SW. It's not as smoothly machined and mated together as the Kahr or Eagle were, but it is slim, light weight, fuctions flawlessly, and very accurate. I also bought it used or wouldnt have done so.
If you can find a nice used one, you wont go wrong. If you dont need the safety, I'd get the Sig.

Good Luck,
Dave
