I grew up shooting & eating all kinds of critters with a single barrel 20 gauge.
20 years later I started looking at the handi rifles remembering to old 20 gauge. TC is too rich for my blood, I can set up a nice boltgun for that $$. I got a 30-30 handi with iron sights, ejector & microgroove rifling. Pretty neat little gun. Ended up trading that for a 35 Remington barrel & started loading my first cast bullets. Shot my best group ever with that barrel, 9/16" @100 meters. Sold it & got a 45-70, that didn't last long once I started looking for brass / ammo! Finally got a 45 colt reamed out to 454 Casull but traded it for a 1920's 16 gauge. Plus I got dad a 300 blackout that he JUST HAD TO HAVE so he takes it out once & tells me to turn it, I told him to buy a boltgun... anyways, I have gun adhd.
In the end they're okay but for some reason I have yet to figure out, the single shot centerfire doesn't have the character & useability of the single barrel shotgun, which I still use.
I do have a pre WWII Winchester 67 single shot 22 without a stitch of bluing left that shoots good. 1 & 5/8" @ 100 meters. For an 80 year old single shot 22 that was meant to be a kid's gun I feel pretty good about that. I keep it around with a few boxes of CBs & with that mile long barrel it makes less noise than your average pellet gun with far more power. It's great for getting rid of things that chew your clothesline in half, or burrow under your hangar, or to get breakfast on opening weekend without touching off a howitzer.
