Single shot sporter weight ("hunting") turnbolt rimfire of Anchutz quality?

aarongraham, glad to hear that the Henry single shots are accurate.... they are significantly higher quality than the Cricket & Chipmunk in my opinion.

I actually have a single shot youth Marlin SS in .22lr with FO sights & wood stock, which I absolutely love and would never part with voluntarily. I have dedicated it to Aguila super colibris and it's really hard on the squirrels, pigeons, doves, and grackles around here. I have lengthened the LOP via a slip-on recoil pad.

But I want a .17 hummer (I think - again) in a rifle like this - a little longer barrel (maybe 18-20", not a 16" like this one), but in a light/sporter weight - but onto which a medium-large scope would not look too ridiculous. (the scope I have sitting in the safe ready to perch atop the future rifle is a Sightron S2 4.5-14x42mm with AO that goes down to 10 yards).

Edit: On 2nd thought, since you say they came in .17 hummer (I didn't realize that), maybe I should look for a used one. If it's really that accurate, I can possibly overlook the plastic stock and the funky look of a big scope on a little gun - thanks a lot. .22 mag would be interesting too, of course.

Only showing .22lr at the moment: http://www.henryrifles.com/rifles/mini-bolt-youth/

Thanks. I need to combine my two current threads into one thread at some point fully explaining the dilemma here. Ultimately I want a .17 cal of some type. I was hoping to stumble upon a .17 hummer Anschutz or similar single shot. The Savage actually is getting warm, but in .22lr only.

Most of the rimfire bolt actions with detachable mags have single shot adapters available for them. Dunno if you would be willing to settle for an adapter. I have one for my CZ and I believe somebody makes them for Savage. Not sure about the rest.

Ok, I want to throw out one more Hail Mary to ya here... How about a Thompson Center G2 Contender rifle in .17 hmr? They list .17 hmr as one of their factory barrels. You could even get the .22lr match barrel for it as well and have both. And while you're at it a 7-30 waters barrel for deer hunting ;)

But if nothing other than an Anschutz will do, I completely understand. A man has to satisfy his own mind.

Rem 40-X eh? Don't suppose they ever made a sporter weight version. But as suggested by Jim Watson, one could "make it smaller" both in stock and bbl configuration.

What happened to the Rem 504 high-end rimfire? Guess they didn't sell.

Jim Watson, what are "SM2" & Cadet? You mean Izhmash rifles? You have a link to those? Guess it doesn't matter a lot if you cannot get them imported.

Did/do the CMP/ Surplus Kimbers have a scope dovetail?

Rem 40-x was made as a sporter and IIRC there was a single shot version. They are not inexpensive.

The 504 had a magazine. The 22 version suffered from a batch of bad barrels and had many complaints of poor accuracy.

The Izhmash rifles are not anywhere near Anschutz quality.

The Kimber 82G is single shot and high quality, but it's a full sized target rifle, not a sporter. They do have scope grooves.

There's also the H&R M12 target rifle, but it's not grooved.

I once had an Anschutz single shot sporter, but it wasn't grooved either.

Wow, that looks great micro - am not familiar but will look into it. I guess I have to decide if I want a .22lr or want some .17 to shoot, first.

natman, very very helpful, thank you.
