Single shot sporter weight ("hunting") turnbolt rimfire of Anchutz quality?

Does such a thing exist? Doesn't seem to - new.

What older used Anschutz models (or similar high end quality) should I look at to find a single shot bolt action in a sporter weight rifle?

Mainly interested in a .17 hummer or .22 magnum, but any rimfire....

Thanks.

Not a big demand for single shot sporters, probably why there's difficulty finding one. Most hunting sporters I'm aware of are repeaters, tube or box magazine fed.

Hmmmm, maybe it's time for an 1885 Lo Wall. Wish they weren't $1,400. I could go maybe $900 or $1,000 but not $1,400 - sheesh.

But are there ANY old discontinued models of Anchutz that were single shot? I found a couple old ones like the 111 and KK, but interested in something newer, with scope dovetail.

OK, I want to open up my question to include the tube-mag-fed turnbolts, such as the Marlin 981T / 981 TS - anything like that but of higher quality like Walther, Anschutz, etc.?

The aesthetics might not quite be up to par with an Anschutz, but Izhmash, a Russian company, makes some very accurate .22's. They have at least one model that is single shot IIRC. You may have to look used for one though because I don't think they are being imported as of right now thanks to the Obama administration.

They make rifles mostly geared toward biathlon or match shooting, but they have some lighter weight models as well.

The best shooting rimfires I have seen are the Kimbers I got at CMP. I sold my two Anschutz rifles because neither could hang with the Kimbers. The Anschutz seemed to like high dollar Eley ammo and the Kimbers just happen to like Wolf.

From the sounds of it, this is below your budget, but for around $400 its hard to beat a CZ for accuracy and fit & finish. This is my 455 Varmint .22lr that I compete in monthly 100 yd benchrest matches with. I installed a DI trigger spring and adjustable sear, did some light polishing, and the trigger now breaks like glass at 8 ounces. I have outshot a lot of guys using much more expensive rifles. It loves SK(Lapua) Standard Plus, which happens to be some of the cheaper target ammo out there.

Thanks all. Guys, I've had CZ 452s and 453s. I've had the Izhmash Biathlon Basic. All excellent rifles, but not what I'm looking for now.

Which Izhmash is a single shot though.... that's what I want now... depending. Does EAA still import Baikals / Izhmashs?

Is one of these single shot? I clicked on them and still cannot tell... http://www.rwcgroupllc.com/firearms/izmash-22-rifles-and-target-rifles

I'll check out Kimber too - does Kimber STILL make rimfires? There are none shown on their site: http://www.kimberamerica.com/rifles

Thanks.

I am pretty sure the SM2 is a single shot, but even the Cadet is still 8.8 lbs with Marksman style stock and peep sights. Hardly "sporter weight" in my book.

Single shot or tube. Something wrong with a box magazine? You will have a hard time beating the CZs or BB for a grand.

If you have or ARE a stockmaker, you could get an Army surplus Kimber G82 or H&R M12, start carving until you find a sporter stock inside the big target stock, and cut the barrel off, even have it fluted.

I read an old Gun Digest article in which a guy started with a 40X rimfire barreled action and stocked it up to look like a 700 BDL Varmint.

You could always just give in and get that Cooper 57M you are asking about. That is what you were asking about, wasn't it? ;)

I do not know that Kimber ever sold the rifles to the public. These were military contract rifles used by some U.S. shooting team. CMP probably still has some. Last time I was there they had plenty.

I doubt CMP has any left, but they are out there in the secondary market as people fail to figure out anything they are good for besides careful slowfire target shooting.

several years ago i made a trade for a few rifles and and ended up with about 40.00 more comming my way and was offered a single shot H&R pioneer model 750 .22 single shot to even up the deal. it turns out that rifle will shoot .5-1.0" groups at 50 yrds with a decent scope, it does have dovetail grooves for a scope and very light. its no annie, win or rem, but for a inexpensive light walking small game rifle it fits the bill. eastbank.

There is another you might consider,,,

It's not an "Annie" for sure,,,
But mine is way more accurate than I am.

Henry Acu-Bolt .22 LR single-shot.

I think they are a discontinued rifle,,,
But they are still available from some distributors.

They came in .17, .22 LR, and .22 Magnum,,,
budsgunshop.com still has a .22 Magnum version for $312.00.

Just tossing that out there,,,

Can't believe I forgot about the Remington 40-X in .22lr

It is a single-shot, and simply a rimfire version of the 40-X target rifle. I don't know if the Remington custom shop is still making these or not. They can be found used though if you do a bit of searching.

Remington also makes the model 547 which is an updated version of the old model 504 rimfire target rifle. I believe the 547's have a magazine. Current versions of the 547 look very similar to a model 700 CDL

Just throwing some more options out there

You guys are righteously awesome.....

Rem 40-X eh? Don't suppose they ever made a sporter weight version. But as suggested by Jim Watson, one could "make it smaller" both in stock and bbl configuration.

What happened to the Rem 504 high-end rimfire? Guess they didn't sell.

Jim Watson, what are "SM2" & Cadet? You mean Izhmash rifles? You have a link to those? Guess it doesn't matter a lot if you cannot get them imported.

Did/do the CMP/ Surplus Kimbers have a scope dovetail?

"is there something wrong with a box mag?" - that is precisely the right question! The answer is yes, I despise them!

About the only ones (detach box mags) I'd get in a rimfire are the Ruger flush 10/22 style rotary, or the Savage - the Savage 93s stay in there really solidly, riding on that "post" with a stiff metal clip.

Thanks again - good suggestions all - please keep them coming.

Here's the real deal right now, in the big picture. I want ONE highly precise rifle (though it doesn't have to be a rimfire necessarily). I sold my beloved CZ 453 (yes in part due to the detach. box mag), but want one rifle to replace it, and it will be a .17 cal of some flavor - either .17 HMR or .17 WSM or .17 Hornady Hornet or .17 Rem fireball). But since I have not ruled out .17 HMR, I wanted to explore some rimfire options. Although I'm leaning toward the .17 Hornady Hornet for this build. The use of this rifle is dual-purpose: mainly for a fun range gun / noobie inductor to guns, but also as a turtle & crow specialist in the field. But I think I want a little more oomph than .17 hummer for this purpose, in case of a longish shot on a crow in the wind.

So the criteria are one of those 4 .17 cal chamberings (2 rimfire, 2 centefire), very high quality. NO detachable box mag (except Ruger or Savage). Can be single shot or tube-mag fed, or fixed box mag fed.

The Ruger 77/17 looks real nice in .17 HH for this purpose EXCEPT that it's too danged heavy (heavy 24" bbl). I'm looking for a 19-22" bbl, sporter weight.

The SM2 and Cadet are Izmash from the link in Post #8.
As I said, almost surely single shots but not exactly sporter weight.

Remington made some 40-X .22 Sporters - I actually had one - but they were box magazine repeaters. Wish I had it back instead of what I traded it for.
You might could find a single shot target model and cut it down, as I also mentioned.

The CMP Kimber 82G has a Tip-Off 3/8" dovetail, the H&R M12 does not. I have the Ken Viani scope base on my H&R and it is functional but big and bulky. If I were to cut it down to sporter profile, I would ditch the add on and have it drilled and tapped for regular bases of some sort.

I knew a guy who bought five of the low grade 82Gs and rebarreled at least one to 17 HMR. He didn't spend any time making it look good, but it sure shot.

Browning sold their last run of "Low Wall" single shots from Miroku in 17 HMR. They are handsome little rifles.
