Single shot big bore handguns

I thought all that was out there were the Encore, Contender, and Freedom Arms; but in the last week or two I have stumbled into the Wichita and Commanche.

Is anything else out there?

Black powder pistols are a no no for hunting deer in Ohio, so forget those.
Forget old designs only in antiquated cartridges.
I want something that can be chambered for 44 mag, 445 supermag, 454 casull or 460 SW.

More searching and found RPM XL:

Rossi Wizard...
I called Rossi they told me all about the pistol.
I called my dealer, he said they don't really exist.
I called Rossi back, they confirmed they don't really exist.

Big?

Well....how big do you want to go?
Of all the brands mentioned, the Encore arguably offers the most choices.
The 460 is available as is the 500 S&W.
Numerous wildcats are also available....450 and 50 Alaskan are two.
Check out SSK Industries for many powerful chamberings,
Pete

I have other threads as to why i am looking for something besides an Encore. Summary is I want a 460 and the TC 460 SW barrels have major problems. The third party ones are pretty expensive. The Encore is also pretty heavy for a pistol, which isn't bad for the 460, but makes it pointless for a lot of the other calibers.

If the Rossi was made with an initial gun + 2 barrels costing less than my frame is worth, I would ditch the Encore and head to it.

This probably ends with me buying a third party 460 or TC 454 barrel mid to late summer so I have it to hunt with in the Fall, but, until then, I am going to make as many threads about this as possible.

John, is there a particular reason it has to be a "big bore"? If you are looking for a hunting pistol with longer-than-normal-pistol range, there are lots of calibers available in an Encore that are not "big".

I recogognize that you may wish to avoid T/C's version of the .460 but you can get that kind of range and power by going to the rifle calibers that T/C sells pistol barrels for. The .308 comes to mind - especially if you handload. Use a faster burning powder and you should come close to getting decent carbine type peformance out of a 15" barrel.

Ohio hunting laws.
straight wall cartridges less than I forget what length. Pretty limiting. no JDJ for starters.

Otherwise I'd prolly be rocking a 30-30.

Reinventing the wheel ?? In 1870 our military had single shot ,a remington rolling block pistol of 50 caliber !:D

Single shot military PISTOL in 1870? You may be right, but I don't know of it and can't find it. SPringfield 50-70 trapdoor I know, but that is a rifle of course.

I don't think you can get it in a 460, but E.A. Brown was still making single shots in both rifle and handgun last I knew. Try www.eabco.com . I know he's making them in bottlenecks.

had a buddy that had a Savage Striker... bolt action single shot pistol... his was in .308... not sure what other chamberings... Remington XP-100 was a similar gun only available used now a days...

I've use a Contender to deer hunt for years ( I can use a pistol in the shotgun zones, & I'm not much of a shotgun guy ) I started with a 45-70, switched to a 30-30, last couple years, it's been a custom 45 Colt

John, I'm not sure what you want or what your budget is ....

but I'm seeing a lot of Freedom Arms - large frame single action revolvers -- on the used market right now ...in 6" and 7 1/2" barrels ...in .454 Casull and .475 Linebaugh ....and even one in .500 Wyoming Express... some with scopes already mounted ...or at least scope rings on the guns...for $ 1,000 - $ 1,200 ..../ new these guns are $ 2,250 - $ 3,250 or so....depending on the options you want...

Uberti makes repros of the Remingtom military rolling block but not anything with bore larger than 357 mag.

I really wish the commanche was just a little higher quality such that it wcould fire 460. In my mind a $275 or $300 commanche in 44 mag or 460 sells pretty well with all the state with shotgun and pistol only laws.

On the EA Browning.
I don;t see the point. The finish is no better than an Encore, it doesn't switch barrels, it doesn't seem to be chambered in the higher pressure calibers, and it is considerably more expensive.

I picked up a blued Encore 460 barrel for $175. At that price I can shoot 454 out of it until I find one of the few loads that are supposed to work out of them.

Mete:
Can't find any single shot pistols by Uberti currently. Have a model name or link?

been all over specialty pistol the last two months or so. Really like the forum.

I ended up buying a blued TC 460 barrel. At the price it was offered I just couldn't pass it up.

End of this story... until I try to figure out a 460 load in it that is accurate. Then the obscenity filter may come into play.
