Since everything always turns into a caliber war.

I enjoy my 9MM just fine and that is what I shoot most often, but if ammo was priced the same regardless of caliber, I'd shoot my .357 revolver and my .45 ACP 1911 a lot more often.

Of all the calibers I have owned or shot I would take .22 lr hands down.
I have had more fun with a .22, I can plink, hunt bunnies or beer cans and teach my son to shoot on it all for pennies per shot. Old timers took headshots on whitetails to get their families through the winter with a .22.

Just try to find soneone that just dosnt like .22s. They are notorious for duds and jams but who complains? We love them too much to complain... bring up 10mm vs 45 and people will go on and on how they hate the other cartridge.
Dont get me wrong, I do really like some centerfire better than others but I just dont have any bad memmories of the old .22

Another vote for 9x19 for all the reasons mentioned.

A well made 1911 or a quality .357 revolver are wonderful things, and everyone should have a dozen or so of each (I wish) but the one that meets all of my needs is a compact 9mm.

.40 caliber----high capacity, no need for +P power ammo, accurate with practice and the right technique---prices around here are in line with 9mm ammo in all categories.

At ten yards. Not perfect but for a defensive point and shoot weapon, I will take it. (Glock 22 Gen. 4)

I have two criteria for handguns.

For me, this is an either/or proposition.

#1. It must begin with a .4
#2. It must end with Magnum

Having said that, my High Standard in .22 has been used in more actual shootings than any other firearm I own. (Killed 1 possum, scared off a half dozen coyotes, and punctured innumerable soda cans.)

I don't have a favorite yet, but I do intend to stick to .22, 9x19mm and .45 for most of my semi-auto purchases. The 5.7mm and 9x18mm are exceptions I can think of right now. Cause I'd like to own a fiveseven and a makarov at some point.

Then again the key word in all that is "intend" who knows what the future may hold. :D

I'll take a 9mm whenever I can get it. For very small pistols I can settle for a .380, but I still prefer 9mm. I will only touch .45 in a 1911. In a revolver, .357 Magnum is my pick.

9 mm is my choice of defensive calibers for the reasons previously covered. I shoot more .22LR for plinking, though - lots of cheap fun and good practice.

I don't worry so much about the caliber as much as the gun itself, the features, size (something on the compact end that can be CC well), feel in the hand and how well it shoots and I shoot it. Based on that I would tend towards 9mm or 380 ACP. I don't have anything against a caliber per se, 22 LR would be great based on the cost but can be too unreliable in a semiauto, for 45 ACP there just aren't any guns that fit what I want, 38 special gives you revolvers with not enough capacity. Other calibers just don't interest me and the cost can be prohibitive to practice with, especially if compared to 9mm which to me is just fine to begin with.

9mm also gives you a wider selection of guns (although maybe not so much these days), from subcompacts to full-size so I can buy one type of ammo that will fit the bill for more of what I shoot.

Non +P 38 spl, LSWCs. Casting my own, I can shoot it about as cheap as 22s, its accurate, allows me to carry a light weight revolver in my pocket, Same round I shoot in competition and carry.

Its mild enough and accurate enough to give me the confidence to put my bullets where they are suppose to go, yet heavy enough out of a 642 to put down horses or other farm animals if need be. Works on rattlers in the yard and works on small game for dinner while camping and horse back riding.

Keeps coyotes and other critters out of my chicken pen.

.357 Magnum

1. Devastatingly effective and consistent results in real world use.
2. Ammo readily available from .38 SP. through .357 with a tremendous variety of loads.
3. I am accurate with it.
4. See #1

I LIKE:

I LIKE:
50BMG for the challenge of long distance shooting
444 and 458 for hunting
416 and 408 for uses in target shhoting
338 and 375 for long range hunting
308 for hunting
284 for an all purpose rifle
277 for some stupid reason
264 for a new challenge
257 for a fun under-used caliber
243 for a varmit caliber when using correct projectile
204 and 224 for pest control
177 and 218(22LR) for plinking

Pistol and revolver calibers:

You get the jist of this - I LIKE THEM ALL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm kinda partial to the .40 because I have practiced with it, and have become pretty good. I also like the 45acp as well. I don't own any 9mm's yet :)

I like 1911s, so that naturally leads me to the .45 ACP. I also like the Browning High Power and the H&K P7M8, so those lead me to 9mm Luger.

I think I'm one of the few people comfortable carrying a .22. I often carry my XD 9mm, and 9mm is my favorite centerfire by far. However, with shorts and a t-shirt I have my SR22 tucked in a holster with quality .22 ammo I never have issues that bulk ammo gives me.

Plus, I could put 5 shots in the center of the head quickly if I had to - combine that with the ease of carry and I find myself with a .22 pretty often.
