Sign says: "No CCW" -- do you carry?

You have a state issued CHL and you are about to enter an establishment (fast food place, supermarket, etc.) when you notice a sign saying that concealed weapons are prohibitted. Do you: [a] go in with the gun anyway (after all, it's concealed); leave the gun behind; [c] take your money and support another business that has a more favorable policy?

Now, let's change it slightly. Suppose state laws forbids businesses, municipalities and counties from enacting laws more severe than state laws (such as in Florida). Would that change your answer?

I don't read door signs. In Arizona, it is plausable deniability, if you don't see the sign, you ain't gotta go.

I am a good-guy. There is no need to disarm me. The shop owner will not protect me. The bad guys will take advantage of anyone foolish enough to obey the sign.

If the sign commanded, "For Your Safety Do Not Resist Criminal Attack" would you comply? It is private property, after all.

Rick

For the most part, if its not listed in the State law as a non carry area and they choose to limit my rights me and my money walk. I see absolutely no reason for me supporting someone violating my rights. Taxes are bad enough. There are pleanty of stores out there that offer the same products, some at even better prices. If they want to screw with my rights, F-em.

There are some nice things about Florida eh

I thought I'd seen it all, until a 22WMR spun a bunny 2 1/4 times in the air!

I don't carry into schools or federal land simply because I know I'd get the book thrown at me. Any where else I carry anyway, especially if it's just that establishment's personal preference. Tough!

I took the boys to a state park over spring break. Even though there's no state law forbiding you to carry in the park, they had a big sign up saying guns had to be locked up and unloaded. Leave the gun in the car, unloaded .... a woman with two kids hiking deep in the woods? Right! Not THIS woman!

I've said it many times here:

The government does NOT have the right to force myself or my family to DIE at the hand of criminals in order to satisfy their statist "laws". I am a law-abiding citizen, for whom the right to "keep and bear arms" has been infringed. If I get arrested, I'll fight on those grounds.

Screw the socialist bast*rds!

Irony is: the sign only applies to criminals. No one really cares if you are a good guy and carry a gun. But, if you have bad intentions, then they care. So, the sign only applies to people that ignore them anyway.

Most every store I have talked to so far states that they just don't want to know, or their customers to know, that you have a gun. They want to make the sheeple feel safe with the sign (they truly believe that a sign wards away bad people), and they don't want you to scare anyone. They really don't care as long as you keep it concealed.
Keep your gun well concealed and it will never be a problem. It's the "don't ask, don't tell" policy of gundome.

My state, treading on God given Constitutionally recognized rights to self defense, issues Permits to Carry a Concealed Handgun. Right or Wrong, their law is part of the Criminal Code and I am obliged to obey it and the litany of Federal restrictions regarding Post Offices, Banks, Federal Reservations and etc. From my perspective the operative word is "concealed". I consider this to mean hidden from view; no one should know that you are armed. If done properly, the concealment will be blind to both "good" and "bad" folks, barring Xray vision and/or metal detectors. The only way any party will know that you are carrying will be by presentation of your arm(s) in the face of threat from deadly force. In such an event, preservation of life becomes the prime objective; observance of immoral carry limits a distant second.

A local sporting goods store (Fishermen's of Portland, OR) has large signs at the door and checkout counters proclaiming that no loaded guns are allowed on the premises, except those carried by law enforcement personnel.

I told the manager that I would not shop there until the sign was changed to include Concealed Handgun License holders. After all, they sell handguns and give the class necessary to obtain a CHL right there in their store, so why not go all the way?

He said words to the effect that the sign was to discourage some "Elmer Fudd type straight out of a Deliverance movie" from bringing his loaded hunting rifle/shotgun inside. He said I should just carry and keep quiet, and nobody would bother me.

So what happens if I "print" somewhere near the soccer ball department, and a dozen mad mothers freak out? I don't think he'd bail me out if that happened, especially if they reported that I seemed "suspicious", or seemed "threatening".

I told him I was sticking with my boycott, that his company was acting in a hypocritical manner, and my friends would not shop at his store either. But I still feel like I lost the battle.

Fisherman's?

I lived in Portland most of my life, and I never heard of them. Where are they, and how long have they been in business?

It's a private property issue. They own the place and can post if they want. If their business doesn't suffer, they really don't care if you are offended.

The answer for me is to WALK, but first, go inside and ask to speak to management. Ask if the store is willing to provide protection for you from the time you park your car until the time you drive off. Ask if they are willing to be liable for ANY harm or property loss/damage that comes to you or anyone else who is prevented from protecting themselves. If they are stupid enough to say yes, then have them put it in writing.

If they say no, tell them THAT is why you will not be a patron any longer and neither will anyone you know...or anyone they know, and so on, until you have reached as many people as possible. Also tell them you intend to write a letter to the local paper making sure that everyone knows about their "willing victim" policy. If the publicity leads to slow sales the policy might change.

Dennis,

Fishermen's recently bought Larry's sporting goods on McLoughlin Avenue in Oregon City (The Oregon City shopping center off of I-205) next to Rite-Aid (Formerly Payless Drug), and have another store in the area as well.

Doesn't your family live in O.C.? I'm sure they've heard of it.

My family is all dead. My wife's family lives in OC (I graduated HS there). We bought my wifes Gold Cup at Larry's. Great place. Heard it went under, but didn't know who bought them.

Wife & I used to go to Shari's there all the time, and SCUBA diving over at High Rocks and at Carver. When I was a teen, we lived off Redland road, about 5 miles our from OC.

Small world...

The Oaks Mall in Gainesville, Fl used to have No CCW signs posted about 12 ft up on the parking lot light polls. Not big signs either. Anyway an owner of a local resturant goes into mall and is the food court area and his pistol prints. Someone got spooked calls GPD, they come out take the guy into custody, do the "incident to arrest" search and find about a gram of cocaine.

Guy gets good lawyer, says "I didn't notice sign", cocaine gets suppressed as does weapons violation.

Mall puts signs up on door for awhile, then when it was remodeled they were removed and not replaced.

A local theatre has a small 3X5" sign right next to the no smoking sign in the lower left corner of box office. I didn't notice it, til the wife pointed it out.

Will I carry in that theatre? No, I won't go back.

Hey - Portland was my home town for half my life. Larry's was great. I remember seeing one of the COP 357 four barrelled pistols there.

Almost bought it until sanity returned.

Texas is fun but Papa Haydyns was too die for!

I always carried there.

I've heard this "if it's private property" thing a few times now and it doesn't wash. If you own a house and invite a friend over you have the right to ask him not to bring his gun inside.
If you own a store and sell merchandise to the public you now open yourself up public law. You can not put a sign up that says NO BLACKS, NO HISPANICS, am I right. Why, because by law you are discrimminating. It doesn't matter if you own the business.
Well, by law you are allowed to CCW in that state in all area's except those listed by the law. Unless the law gives private business the jurisdiction to create their own laws then the signs and request are hogwash.

Unlike Texas, Florida does not have a provision for business owners to block legal CCW. Any 'no weapons' signs are invalid.

I carry anywhere not prohibited by state/federal law.
