Sig P229

Hi if someone can give their opinion on this p229 I have the opportunity to buy. A 40sw from the late 90s, comes with 6 magazines 4 12rounders and 2 10 rounders, a .357 barrel included also, with box and papers. I imagine the night sights are getting dim, don't know. It was carried on duty for a couple of years and has sat in the guys safe, appx 600 rounds through it. He is asking 900 or a reasonable offer. I offered 750 and would agree on 800 if comes back with that. Do you think that is about right? Thank you.

I’ve got one in 9mm and it has been a great gun the size is pretty good for carry. Now, the price seems a little high since you can get a new one on Gun Genie for about $950, so if he’ll settle for lower price go for it.

I think he's asking that much because of the sig barrel and the extra magazines.
Still too much if I can get it for 800?

Right now online retailers are selling police turn in P229s in 40SW for $500 and less. 5 extra mags adds around $150 if you had to buy them new, the barrel another $155. The problem here is that you could find used mags likely for less and that 357 SIG barrel is only really useful if you plan to use it (be realistic with yourself on that front). The used market right now is terrible for sellers with prices on both new and used as low as they are. He's dreaming, IMO, at $900. If you really want the barrel I wouldn't personally go over $800 and that's just because you can inspect it yourself. Be aware though that the barrel may not get you much if you choose to resell it as the demand for 357 SIG is pretty niche. Also if you haven't shot 357 SIG before be aware it is very loud, to the point of doubling up hearing protection if you're shooting next to a guy using one.

Yes that's something to consider I have never shot one. A gun store I go to has a 229 40 for 475. A bit of holster wear . I may go look at that one again.

Right, but those typically have one mag and don't include an additional 357 SIG barrel. His price is definitely high, but whether those other items are worth it to you becomes a big factor.

If the pistol is DA/SA (DAO and DAK SIG P229s typically go for less), you have the ability to closely examine the pistol for barrel wear and wear on the slide and frame rails, and the pistol is in good condition, I would consider a rough price on the pistol to be $500 max. If it is a no-rail P229 that might be a positive since many prefer the looks of the rail-less P229 (assuming you don't want a rail).

Of course, that assumes you want a pistol chambered in .40 S&W. The P229 shoots .40 S&W and 357 SIG about as nicely as any handgun ever made.

I would value the magazines at about $125-150 max assuming the springs are in good condition. If the 357 SIG barrel is in good shape and you want to shoot 357 SIG that is worth another $150 or so.

I agree the asking price is high. I think your offer of $750 is closer to the true value of the package. If the pistol is in very nice shape, I wouldn't consider $800 outrageous, but I would not go higher.

The market is flooded with LE trade ins for at or under $500. Check Summit Gunbroker.

$900 is dreaming.

$800 is almost retail for what he has.

I'd pass, and just grab an LE trade in.

The guy never got back to me. I'm going to check the one out at a gun shop I go to they want 475 it has holster wear that's ok but I will tell them I want to look at the rails and barrel and see what they look like. I will post a picture if I get it.. I know I could always add a 357 barrel later.

Very true. And be sure to look around online for the barrels when you get to that point. They're not overly popular so some distributors mark them low to liquidate them.

Several years ago i bought an older P229 with both the 357 sig and 40 barrels and a couple mags. No rail. Think i paid $600 or $650. Also came with couple holsters and a second set of grips.

$900 sounds high to me. You can do a little research and come up with a better deal for sure.

My P229 is one of my favorites. Great handler and shooter. I do find i shoot it more in 40 than 357. No particular reason other than i shoot it better in 40 LOL.

Sig M11-A1

I purchased a used M11-A1 (229) really for about $550 used. It shoots great and one of my favorite guns. It is very accurate and hasn't missed a beat. A new 225 was found and it is a bit easier to carry and just as wonderful. These are great for carrying and ready to go on the first double action pull.

I got mine used also, but you got a better deal on yours. The SRT is the way to go on a P2xx classic Sig, and I agree with everything else you say about the pistol.

Can't quite agree on the P225-A1. IMHO, Sig should have based this new gun on the "old" P225/P6 instead of the P239. It would have been great to have a source of supply for new factory mags for my own P6, but the P225-A1 mags don't interchange with the older P225 or P6. Personally, I think I'd rather go with a used P239 rather than a new P225-A1:)

I will say this. I love, love, LOVE, SIG Sauer handguns. The older the better.

However, buyer beware. SIG Sauer WILL NOT warranty any SIG pistol that is not purchased brand new.

Even if there is a factory defect, like when I had an out of spec slide that destroyed the frame. Along with several other issues people have had with their warranty.

So, it's like buying a used car out of warranty. It's as is and all repairs are on you.

I agree with those making the point that there's too little difference in price between new and used to sacrifice the lifetime warranty by opting for used to save a little money. I am surprised that the Germans haven't arrived yet...;)

It is a world class combat pistol, you will never look back if you buy it. But if you shop on-line i a sure you can buy on line for under $800. CDNN has a 229 9mm carry SAS Gen 2 for $799. You can get lesser grade P229's cheaper, if you shop diligently on-line, some times it takes me a week to get the best on-line deal.
