Sierra Ganeking Bullets

I've only shot a few Game Kings over the years, mostly back in the 70's, 73 to 75 as I recall. I felt the 130 gr. .270 bullet was way to much of a meat destroyer and frankly although the 150 gr. 270 bullet was better, it too mangled up too much meat. The .270 was set aside to gather dust in the closet. I worked up a load for the 30-06 with what was the then new 165 gr. Game King hollow point bullet, shot at a coyote of opportunity at roughly 200 yards and had me a two piece coyote. Near as I could tell I'd hit the spine ands blooey! Stayed away from then after that.
Fast forward to Auigust 2009 when I got the chance to do a guided antelope hunt and decided to bring the .270 out of mothballs. Not much time to do any load work up so I used the 150 gr. .270 GK's and cobbled up a load that was pushing 2900 FPS, sighted in and went on the hunt. Figured shot would be way out yonder. We spotted my antelope at a bit over a half mile out and tried a stalk which was successful and I got the shot at about 75 yards. The bullet hit right at the short ribs and exited just behind the right shoulder. Entrance wound was about .75" and the exit just about 1.5". Big surprise as I expected the exit wound to be a lot larger than it was.
On my elk hunt this last January, my hunting partner shot his cow elk at about 90 yards with his .270 WSM and a 150 gr. Game King. Entrance wound was about one inch and the exit about 3.5 to 4.0". Not too surprising considering the higher velocity from the WSM.
I have to wonder if Sierra hasn't beefed that bullet up a bit? I definitely expected a lot more damage on my antelope. Wish we could have revoered those bullets though. :(

Don't know about other bores, but there are 2 SGK in 7 mm. One is for moderate velocity like 7x57, the other for 7 Mag and the like. They are very accurate in my 7 Mag, but no more so than Nosler AB. Both 160's, and I would be happy with either on elk.

I've only had one personal experience with the bullets on a deer. I shot a button buck at about 75 yards with a 130 gr bullet out of a .270. The shot was broadside and hit in the lung area but a bit higher than I would have liked. When I butchered the deer, it looked like the bullet had exploded not only wasting both lungs but also penetrating the diaphragm and making it appear to be gut shot. The bullet was loaded in Federal Premium ammo that I had picked up at a gunshow.

Now one of the best bullet arguments I ever heard was between two friends of mine. One has hunted all over the world and the other was an African Ph. They are also long time friends and sometimes hunting partners and have this long running battle. The African Ph maintains that these Sierra bullets are only good for punching paper and favor Hornady cup n core bullets. The other hunter will only use Sierra 130 gr bullets in his .270 for everything except dangerous game in Africa.

My advice, draw your own conclusions and have fun. :)

Consier using the...

165gr HPBT, as they are "stouter" construction.
This from the ballitic techs ar Sierra, I was contemplating using my whitetail load of 165 SPBT over 40+ grs of 748 on elk but they suggested switching to the HPBT.

I'm considering making some 30/30 loads using the 165 SPBT / HPBT thru my 21" Contender.

Good Luck and let us know what happen.

Aint shot any deer way out there with them but inside about 300yds.My MKII Ruger 25-06 is like the hammer of THOR. with the SGK'S.POP & FLOP.

Sierra Gamekings is all I ever use now. I've shot deer anywhere from 10 yards out to about 275 yards mostly with a 30-06. Other calibers that I've used them in is 25-06, 308, 270, and 7mm-08. IIRC never had one blow up but I never retrieved a bullet either and I've shot them at a lot of different angles anywhere from headon to a very tight rear angle. If I hit a deer properly they never traveled much more than 50 yards with it usually being on the spot.
