SHTF Car Trunk Gun HELP!!!

Can anyone give me a real situation where a rifle is needed for self defense? Unless you're shooting BG's at 50 yards, and I would question anyone who does, a shotgun and a hand gun are more than enough to protect yourself.

LOL:) I bet you could rig something up.:D

Anyhow the whole SHTF thing, seems to be misrepresented a bit. It seems when people think of that they think of our society coming to an end...you know how it always is in the movies. I really don't think that will happen.

However SHTF situations sure do happen as localized events in a small areas of our country for a limited time on a somewhat regular basis. Usually the result of natural disasters....as we all have seen. So being prepared for those situations does seem wise. (It takes a lot more than a good gun by the way.)

In some situations a rifle does seem like a good choice. In New Orleans where it was an extreem SHTF situation, for example, there were BG's sniping at people just for the hell of it. A shotgun is not going to do you much good there. Also 50 yards or even 100 is not reallythat far away, you might want to beable to reach out that far if you need to. It seems from what we have seen in some SHTF situation the BGs become very bold and will come for what you have if you can't run them off. I rather be able to run them off at 50 yards that at 5 yards.

Mosin Nagant with the bolt removed and kept in the glove box. 440 rounds of ammo. Should set you back around $120 + tax ... and shipping & FFL if buying online.

I really don't think a shotgun gives you much over a handgun in terms of capability. If you have to tote around a long gun, a rifle gives you much more capability in terms of knockdown power, shooting through cover, and distance. A rifle with an intermediate cartridge like a .223 or 7.62x39mm is very versatile without being extremely heavy, unmanageable or overpowered.

I would call the the Greater Los Angeles County Inter-ethnic Spring Festival of 1992 (aka the Rodney King Riots) an SHTF situation. The police, God love 'em, weren't much use to anybody. I recall some LAPD talking head assuring the sheeple that that they had the situation in hand and people didn't need guns to defend themselves because the police could protect them. I guess all those buildings were on fire was because LAPD said it was OK. Reginald Denny got his head busted within a couple of miles of where we lived. It's a strange feeling to see columns of smoke rising from all around and know they are coming from buildings torched by rabid sub humans. Since all sales of guns and ammo were banned for the duration I was glad to have what I did.

A lot of different ways stuff can go bad. Having a handgun, shotgun or rifle available can keep many of them from doing permanent harm to you and yours. Trying to figure out just what SHTF scenero to be prepared for is a crap shoot.

Handgun: can be with you always. Is a wonderful equalizer that 19 out of 20 times prevents escalation to violence. I don't know when or who would deliberately challenge someone facing them down with any handgun - even the sub-defensive calibers, though I wouldn't carry less than 9mm and personally prefer .357-auto. But I also carry an unloaded AK-47 and 5 loaded magazines in a bag behind my pickup seat.

Rifle: has a lot more power and distance capability. If the situation justifies shots beyond 50 feet, the rifle is the best choice. Rabid dog, 4-legged preditors or 2-legged preditors, the rifle is probably the best choice. However, there aren't many scenereos where a normal guy is going to feel justified at killing people at 100-yard or greater ranges. I think the SHTF rifle to be parked in your vehicle should be inexpensive, have large magazine capacity and doesn't require .308 or 300-mag ballistics nor long-range scopes. However, there are places I visit where I have to remember to trade my "evil" rifle in for my shotgun.

Shotgun: is the best intimidator and for 10-50 yard defense is probably the best choice. With 000 - #7 shot it is a lot safer in populated areas than rifle bullets. If I'm standing down a gang of thugs, I wanna be holding my Mossberg 590 special-purpose (20" unchoked, ghost-ring, 8-round tube). When I visit my old Kalifornia friends, the Mossberg in a bag with a bandoleer of slug-00-04 shells replaces my carbine.

Odds are I won't need to forcefully employ any of these in my lifetime. Having them nearby is good for my emotional health - just a few less things to worry about. I also carry extra clothes, food and other tools that I don't expect to use. Guns are no different. Guessing what to carry is just that: guessing. But we can try to make thoughtful guesses.

P.S. regarding "assault rifles": Can't we, in the shooting community at least, agree that "assault" is a behavior and that guns do not have behaviors? Semi-auto carbines are just another type of gun. They do not animate themselves or attack anyone. Assault rocks, assault bats, assault golf clubs and other applications of the anti-gun-coined adjective are ridiculous. Let's not give the Brady Bunch the advantage of modifying our language.

SHTF- you'll not know it's happening until it's too late. It'll be tasteless, odorless and colorless. Your kit and guns will sit silently in the trunk of your car until someone distributes them to your inheritors- if any of them are alive. When you feel it overtake you, you'll say to yourself " Oh my God, the S is Hitting The Fan and now... ehw&8 ts lf[g sk f do?" as your eyes roll into the back of thier sockets and you hit the floor- gasping for air.

So now, which gun do you think will help:D

My brain is my gun.
