Would animal fat from deer/other wild game work in a pinch as adequate lube?

Lard yes.
Bacon grease unadvisable (salted).

The lanolin spray mix works great and is super easy to use. Years ago (about 30) I used mink oil, worked great unless you don't clean it off.
