I think the split is less obvious when hunting is the main use of the rifle. Let's say a comparison between a lever action (336 30-30/35Rem) for deer/hog hunting and a light weight (M70 308) bolt action. I can see a crossover here, especially if long range is not the concern. Now plinking and action type shooting could draw a bigger distinction between the two action types.

Hmm.
Back in post 20 you make a comment about conservatives being resistant to change.
I notice you are from Austin,Tex.No doubt part of the effort to turn red to blue.
You started a poll.
An honest poll is to gather data to see which way the wind is blowing.
Unbiased and objective.
Then there are those who have a foregone conclusion and they attempt to use a biased poll to leverage their position.Seeking Truth is not the motive.Manipulation is.
The poll is running over two to one against the change.Instead or reading the poll and re-evaluating your position, you argue your position. You have corrupted your own poll.It is now worthless as a data gathering tool.
Tail trying to wag the dog again.
Austin....

I wouldn't split it, just perhaps rename it.

We have "semi-automatics" and then we can have "manually-cycled rifles".

The fact this then covers bolts, levers, pumps and singles can go in the sub-forum description on the main message-board index page.

Why SHOULD bolt and lever be lumped together?

This is just my take on it:
Because they are more alike in that they are manually operated versus automatic/self loading weapons.
My interests in rifles, (classic style sporting rifles that your fathers or grandfathers might have actually hunted with), includes both together.
I have zero interest in AR, AK, plastic-stocked, para-military, SWAT weaponry. No offense intended to the members and staff of this fine forum as I respect other's rights to keep and bear such arms. About the only times I visit the semi-auto forum is when the leading thread is about something more traditional rather than "tactical". So it's appropriate that it's separated from bolt, lever, and pump guns.

Why SHOULD bolt and lever be lumped together?

Because Winchester made some of the best of both.

I agree with HiBC, he articulated a rather succinct response to your inquiry.

With that said, I voted to split them. Because (at present with no signs of changing) the only lever gun I am interested in is the Marlin Model 39A. I do, however, have a great affinity for all types of bolt actions. Regardless of the make, caliber or model.

Splitting the forum would make "surfing" topics easier to find ones more relevant to my interests.

I could probably get by with just a lever action and be just as happy without any bolt-action rifles if it weren't for the fact that the model 70 Winchester is just too good to not have one.

"dump the SWAT forum."

You do realize who pays the bills for your FREE, and totally advertising free, access to this forum, don't you?

I am a great defender of Austin for its many fun things to do. It has some great gun resources also. I am also not that conservative on many issues - but I guess being a gun guy makes me a right wing nut despite my other views.

That being said - I'm against the proposed split. Adding more forums to moderate (with our pay levels) without noticeable benefit (oh, you have to look through a few more posts -) isn't appealing.

Austin - restaurants, GT Distributors for guns, McBrides (expensive), nearby competitions (www.texastactical.net, see www.krtraining.com Austin area FAQ), great book store - Book People. Awesome food shopping at Central Market and Antonellis Cheese store, BBQ. So some folks are liberal there - many aren't - get over it.

Well, if you don't want to split the rifle forum into two more usable forums, at least combine Harley Nolden with Curios and relics and dump the SWAT forum.
Haha... :p
That's funny.

The SWAT forum is the reason for ALL of the other sub-forums existence here.

Edit: I see Mike already hit that point.

I voted to split but after reading all the other viewpoints I would choose differently now. That said, I would've never thought this thread would be so entertaining..

Thanks to the SWAT people that we even have this forum. Those folks made a site to share with all of us. Just because some of us lack enthusiasm for the SWAT gear, doesn't make it right to lack some appreciation for how those folks have accommodated our shooting interests. So, thanks to everyone that makes this forum happen.

Here's how it goes:

Bolt, Lever, and Pump Action-
There's no way possible to get an AR thread in here, but somehow it happens.

Semi-automatics -
Preferred location of all AR15 vs. Mini14 threads. On occasion, someone gets in a post about another type of semiautomatic rifle such as 10-22, FAL, BAR and so-on but they quickly get lost. Somehow AR pistols are included in this group. A good place for caliber wars and over priced triggers.
As Mini14 owners become frustrated with the inability to make dime sized groups with the rifle, they migrate into the world of $600 Mil-spec ARs. After all, they heard for years that any bargain-bin AR can outshoot a Mini. The disenfranchised Mini owners turned Mil-spec AR group soon find themselves locked in an epic battle with the High-End ARs.
Some enter the fray with the disenfranchised-Mini-owners-turned-Mil-Spec-AR group as Mil-Spec-owners, bypassing the Mini14 stage all together. They all keep upgrading their ARs while squandering their collective fortunes. They spend much of their time waiting on UPS and FedeX trucks and checking tracking numbers while pretending to go outside and smoke to cover their activities.

You can split the forums into as many or as few as you wish and no matter what, so inattentive ijit isn't going to pay attention.

Oh, and if scrolling past a few threads that don't interest you is such a life hardship....

Can we trade lives? Glad for someone else to deal with my raft of unrelenting crap for awhile.

I say lump 'em all back together or whatever the mods feel like.

30% of the 'built' ARs I see as a RO on a several times a month basis end up
being cycled manually anyway.

So, does pulling the charging handle count as a lever or do we stick with the bolt aspect?

Ricky-rick, I sorta need to see your post in the
form of a graph, as reading it makes my head spin.;)

Splitting them up further means I might miss out on some of these comments.
