should i trade?

old fart

i have a blued police service six made in 1985, it has just very minor frecks of rust spots or some little specks of something in with the bluing. i've used oil 0000 wool, eraser and copper penny. i've got it to the point of it being smooth and i'm keeping it oiled. there is no pitting on the gun at all. the gun has at least 90% bluing left with just a little off at the barrel tip, and locks up solid tight when in firing position. i contacted the previous owner who admitted he kept it in a leather holster which caused the rust, he bought it new and said less than 2000 rds have been thru it. i can't afford a new reblue job as i'm on a fixed income and making ends meet is hard enough. my neighbor has offered me a trade, he has a taurus 65 stainless and a rossi stainless both with 4 inch barrel. they look good but don't lock up as tight as my service six. i love my ruger but it being blued bothers me as i got it to use in the outdoors. i keep it clean and oiled regular so no rust will appear. i've tried to take pics but the rust or whatever the frecks are is so small that it won't show them. everything on the gun is now smooth and running my fingers over the spots, nothing can be felt. i want to keep my service six but rust bothers me, if i knew it wouldn't come back i'd be ok with it, i keep it well oiled. so for those on here what would you do? if you couldn't get it reblued would you keep the ruger or trade? thanks for any help

I would trade, simply for the fact that you're getting two stainless revolvers for one blued one, in a model that I'm no particular fan of. That is just my take on the situation.

I would not make the trade....

Use the gun /keep it clean / wiped down with an oiled rag or silicone cloth - and store it smartly....

I'm of the opinion that pretty much any Ruger is far better to own than a Taurus and a Rossi combined.

i might have not been clear on the trade, he wants to trade me choice of the taurus or the rossi for the ruger not both. sorry for thE confusion.

Good grief. People have used blued guns for more than a hundred years before stainless came along. And they were using them with black powder.

Keep it clean, wipe it off with an oiley rag once in a while, and it will be fine.

I wouldn't trade a Ruger for a Rossi and/or Taurus ever.

Especially a Service Six. It's an extremely robust revolver that should survive many, many rounds of punishing .357 loads.

Stainless stuff can rust, too.
A stainless shootin' iron still needs proper care.
I have rusty stainless scuba knives to prove it.
And human sweat is probably as corrosive as sea water.

thanks everyone, i told him this morning that i will keep my ruger. i went and got some barricade and my local shop, it was the best rust preventive they had is what the shop owner said. thanks again

Actually more so; Human sweat can contain acids that can corrode steel in a matter of hours. My ex brother-in-law ruined a 99% uncut Webley & Scott Mk VI with his acid sweat as well as other guns he owned.

Very true. I'm a machinist for over two decades and I happen to have acidic hands.

My first foray into the trade was in a smallish job shop and the first job they put me on was truing up small sections of 1" diameter cold rolled steel. I was chugging along , and at about lunch time the shop foreman came by to see how I was coming along. He looked at the skid on the floor, where I was stacking the finished blanks, and tapped me on the shoulder. He pointed to the skid and said" Boy, you must have really acidic hands". Sure enough, every-single-part that I handled had rusty finger prints all over the freshly cut surface. I thought I was going to lose my job over it, but he was cool.. said it happens like that for some people. He went and got me some rubber gloves to wear and I cleaned the surfaces on a buffing wheel.

That said, I find most steels do not react that way to my touch. Even uncut cold rolled that is in it's virgin form wont rust that fast for me. Hardened steel doesnt react that way either. But fresh cut steels can rust in the matter of an hour if you have acidic hands.

Yeah.. most my firearms are stainless steel and the ones that aren't I have to make sure to wipe them down after use.

My sweat will turn a watch with "base metal bezel" into pitted junk.

Even if it was a two-fer, I wouldn't do it.

Stainless isn't that much of a premium over blue.

Even the worst condition ruger I would not trade for a Taurus. You are trading a very well built gun made by a company with a strong proven track record for a gun made by a company with a very spotty record for quality..keep the ruger if the rust really bugs you save some cash and have it cleaned up professionally and refinished that thing will last you forever
