Should I keep carrying my Mod. 36?

I say get rid of that five shot peashooter and get a 45 that holds at least 15 rounds to carry!

(Just kidding!):D I have a blued 36, and a nickel 37, that I carry quite often, but lately, like CajunBass, I've been carrying my model 12 snubbie with six rounds.

Cajun, That a sweet lookin snubbie. Those Tgrips looks so good on them also. Do you carry it IWB? It has held up well no doubt. That encouraging. Which I think the bluing on the old Smiths is very good. And what brand of silicone wipes do you use on it? And are they sold in the gun supplies?

walks with gun, Thanks for the offer, and its good that you want to rescue lost and abandoned roscoe's ;) But I don't think I'll put her out to pasture just yet.

Deerslayer IIRC Cajuns model 12-2 is an aluminum alloy frame and not prone to rusting. The barrel and cylinder are steel.

I beleive it is birchwood-casey that used to make silicone wipes. I used to buy them in walmart many years ago.

And I forgot to add, yes keep carrying that gun. If you aren't going to use it why did you buy it?

Why not? I carried a Chief's Special for about 15 years....thousands of rounds
thru the thing. They are damn reliable, is all I can vouch for.:)

The 12-2 does have an aluminum frame, but the barrel, cylinder are steel, and will rust I suppose. I've just never had it happen to me with any gun. I carry it in an OWB leather holster, sorry, I don't know the brand.

The silicone cloths I use come from my local gunshop, and are marked with their name, but they're probably made by Outers or some other outfit like that. I've used the same type cloth from Wal-Mart and they worked just the same.

Thanks Cajun, And thank you all for the replies. I'll keep right on carrying it. I know the gun well, I know what it likes and how she shoots. I feel very confident with her on my side. And now that you guys brought it up. I'm not a S&W expert. SO this Model 12 is a 38spl snubbie that holds SIX rounds? Does it have the Transfer bar so you can carry all six chambers loaded? I'm liking the idea of the SIX SHOOTER! I was thinking all 38 snubbies were 5 shots.

I don't think you are pure enough of heart and soul to keep the 36. You should give it to me (I'll even pay to ship and transfer - nice guy, right?).

If you think it's too pretty to carry - maybe you should buy a plastic fantastic - for the ugly factor...

;)

Just kidding of course. After reading the whole thread you know what to do.

Let me help you out...

What you want is a Glock G27...

That way you can have a butt ugly gun in a caliber that everyone hates. You can feel bad about yourself, your gun and your ammo all in one step!

Glad you took it in the manner I meant it. I love my J frame too. (Even if I have a "g" word around!)

I rotate both and enjoy both of them. When I get to help with training I carry my Glock. So I'm not really a Glock hater. The Model 60 is my EDC during the summer and it always comes along when I go fishing.

I'd love to have a nice 'lil Model 36.

I like your Attitude JGL. I wish all gun guys thought like that. Nothing against a G or the rest of them POLYPLASTIC pistolas. I spent alot of time sifting through different concealed carry guns. I had some plastic ones and all that. And when it was all said and done the old wheel gun just FIT. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that when the chips are down it WILL go bang until its empty and I can put them 5 rounds where it counts.

IF you had gotten any serious replies against keeping it / carrying it in the revolver forum, I would have been surprised!

When does the finish on a gun matter? A) when YOU care about it, B) when a buyer cares about it, C) when it deteriorates to the point the function is impaired (rust, etc).

If you aren't going to sell the gun, then "B" doesn't matter. And "C" is rather rare (as well as preventable). SO what really matters is how you feel about its looks.

If you want the gun to look just like it does now, when your children, or grandchildren inherit it (assuming its still legal to do so when that time comes), then stop using it.

Other wise, I don't see where it matters much. A friend of mine uses a term, "honest wear". He's a bit of a collector, but unlike most collectors, he's not consumed with older guns in like new condition.

Sure, a gun that came out of the factory 50 or 100 years ago, looking today just like it did then is a wonderful thing. BUT a gun with honest wear is a gun that was carried & used, by someone who liked it, and wanted to do that.

It's your call, but unless you are concerned with the market value of the gun, what does the finish really matter?

When I bought my Model 36 snub, it was pristine and unfired or fired very little - a sock drawer gun (vintage early 80s). It's my favorite carry and I can't imagine setting it back and not using it - it's a working gun. I, too, changed out the grips to a set of Pachmyr grips and what an improvement that made over the original grips which chewed my hands up when I was at the range.

I fully expect mine to get some holster wear but I like Smiths and honest wear doesn't put me off at all. I know it's dependable, I can shoot it well and I trust my life with it.

If you want a "pristine" 36, I'd buy another one and set it back as they are out there if you look long enough. I liked my 36 snub so much that I just picked up a 3" Model 36 and that too, is a great shooter and an easy "carry". I like the J frames as much as I do my K frames and have full confidence in what a 38 spl will do if needed.

Unless you are getting worried about "capacity" of rounds, stick with it as you know it works for you.

If its the gun you have and are comfortable with it, carry it. I, on the other hand, would put it in the safe and get a 642-60-649 or something stainless. I exude nuclear fallout quality sweat. I could coat that gun with any oil, wax, protectant on the market and, if carried in my waistband in the summer in Texas, for 5 hours, would have a brown gun instead of blue.

Its that bad. But, the gun itself is good to go. I've carried a 642 for 25 years as a bug. I love J frames.
