IF you had gotten any serious replies against keeping it / carrying it in the revolver forum, I would have been surprised!
When does the finish on a gun matter? A) when YOU care about it, B) when a buyer cares about it, C) when it deteriorates to the point the function is impaired (rust, etc).
If you aren't going to sell the gun, then "B" doesn't matter. And "C" is rather rare (as well as preventable). SO what really matters is how you feel about its looks.
If you want the gun to look just like it does now, when your children, or grandchildren inherit it (assuming its still legal to do so when that time comes), then stop using it.
Other wise, I don't see where it matters much. A friend of mine uses a term, "honest wear". He's a bit of a collector, but unlike most collectors, he's not consumed with older guns in like new condition.
Sure, a gun that came out of the factory 50 or 100 years ago, looking today just like it did then is a wonderful thing. BUT a gun with honest wear is a gun that was carried & used, by someone who liked it, and wanted to do that.
It's your call, but unless you are concerned with the market value of the gun, what does the finish really matter?
