Should I get a CCP?

I think I am going to get one even though I can hold my own against guys twice my size
Remember the old saying: God made men big and small, Mr. Colt made them equal."
Or, to put it another way: Size doesn't matter. :D

To the OP;

If you have a permit and some life event changes such that you feel the need to carry, you will be ready to go immediately.

If you do not have a permit and some life event changes such that you feel the need to carry how long is it going to take?

I would rather allocate the money as of now to something more useful.
That's what used to say every time I paid the family's auto insurance and the homeowner's insurance premiums. (then a house in our neighborhood went up in smoke and suddenly I was glad to be paying those premiums).

$60 a year, or is it every two, every 5??

In PA we pay about that much every 5 years, so for about the cost of a box of cheap ammo every year, I get to carry a firearm.

In terms of convience, I can stick a small pistol or a snubbie in my pocket, go to work, go to the store then go to the range and shoot it, then come home. In PA, I cannot transport a firearm except to and from a range or a gun store if I'm not a CCW holder. If I decide I want to stop on the way to the range, at a store or to get something to eat and someone breaks into my car, I have a lot of explaining to do.

In terms of range security, have you ever thought about all the people walking out of ranges and gun stores with expensive firearms? I'm sure some criminals have. Your walking out of a range with guns worth hundreds sometimes thousands of dollars, unloaded, in locked cases. Nothing will give you douche chills down your spine more then just getting done shooting alone at a public range or out in the wilderness and having a bunch of gang bangers pull up.

In terms of overall security, what happens if you need to go into a bad neighborhood. What happens if you need to buy something very expensive. Do you like carrying a few thousand dollars of your hard earned money and having somone just take it from you. Better yet what if someone threatens your family? Right now you just witness a crime and called the police. Later a couple of teens show up at your door and say, "Hey you don't snitch on our gang, we are going to get you, your wife and your kids." Now what??? Are you going to call 911??? You think they are going to assign a cop to your family 24/7. I know!!! You can get one of those concealed carry permit, just fill out the paperwork and tell the gang to wait 30 to 60 days and....no they are not going to wait.

Its better to have a carry permit and not need it, then to need a permit and not have it.

Ok Ok. You guys convinced me. I am getting one for all the reasons stated.

Now I have to find a time when I can get down there to apply and get fingerprinted.

I live in Maryland which some people may not know is apparently an annex of communist Russia where individual rights or the constitution mean almost nothing. Having grown up here open carry of concealed carry of a firearm is very strange to me. I totally agree with the right and concept of carry and have a non res Fla and Va permit even though I will never be able to get on for MD.
Here is my question for the other permit holders. Although I see the point of carry it still seems like a huge risk/responsibility/pain in the butt to go through every day especially considering how some places you can carry, some you can't, some places you have to show it some you can't etc etc. You wonder in to the wrong place and get caught you can be in big trouble. You get in a situation with someone that may have resulted in a fight or less could easily end in someone getting shot or your gun being revealed to others or the police and you being in trouble even though you did not pull it. In all reality do you feel you live in such a dangerous place you need to carry? I can't help but feel I have sailed through life so far without being in a situation that required me to carry (maybe in part because I was not carrying and dealt with things as such) why do I need to now. I know I do not have a gun so I take precautions to limit my risk. I would think that should be done anyway even if you do carry and maybe really even more if you carry.
On the other hand I see it like this, I have not wrecked my motorcycle in twenty years of riding but I sure as heck wear a helmet and even though I (hopefully) most likely will never need it in the event I DO need it it could be a life and death decision. What is the actual statistical chance of someone needing a firearm on them? If someone told you you had a 1 in 50,000 chance of dropping dead one day but if you carried around (exaggerating the weight and inconvince to represent some of the risk of CCW) a 5lb dumbbell with you every day it would lower your chance to 1 in 100 million would you?

I have a right to defend myself and my loved ones. The law does not demand that I exercise that right, but it allows me to exercise it and I choose to do so. You may, like the majority of Americans, choose otherwise. The reality is that neither you nor anyone else can guarantee that I will not need to defend myself, so I am prepared to do so. Is the risk high? No. Is it zero? No again. You kind of answered your own question with your motorcycle helmet analogy, so I won't bore you with others.

As far as being a pain to carry - no, not if you choose pistol, holster, and clothes that make it feasible and comfortable. As far as disarming to go places where firearms are forbidden - there aren't very many in my state, and one can prepare and take care of things quite discretely and efficiently with just a bit of planning. As far as getting in trouble being caught with a gun where it is forbidden - know and obey the laws.

Your choice remains yours, and mine remains my own - isn't freedom cool?

I think that the more people who have CHL/CCW/CCP, the better.

I love the thought of Pelosi et al reading the stats about how many more people are gun owners and concealed licensees this year, how many guns and how much ammo are being bought, and how every one of those gun owners is a potential voter...and realizing that they dare not introduce any new "common sense" gun legislation.

Best defense is a good offense, and all that...

When I got mine in Ohio I simply wanted the option but didn't honestly think I would carry. Something funny then happened; it opened my eyes to my surroundings and now I can't imagine not having my gun around, don't leave home without it. Looking back it's almost like sticking your head in the sand and hoping for the best; me and my .40 Springfield EMP hang tight! BB;)

Your forgetting one important reason. That being extending your ability to protect your home, family and life. Im on your property doing something i shouldnt be doing. You come outside theres a confrontation. You draw a pistol and you shoot me fearing for your life. With a ccw, chl or ccp; you just extended your legal ability to use deadly force past your door step. Alot of states would burn you on that situation there. Then I take mine when Im on vacation in areas I dont know well. Because I dont have means to know where to retreat or give a out like a few laws state.

Now that's funny, the original posters comment...

When you realize you do have a need to carry it will probably be a little too late.......

My wife, who moved here from Chicago, gave me the best reason I ever heard to get a CHP. She said, "A lot of people worked hard to get this law passed. If we don't take advantage of it, "they" will say "Nobody wanted this law in the first place. We can repeal it."

Numbers count.

Edited to add: Like you, I never thought much about a CHP. I didn't "need" one. But once I got it, I started to carry and now, pretty much, if I have pants on, I'm carrying. I still "don't need it" and hope I never do, but I've got it.

NCARVER - Florida accepts only Florida permits.

State CCW Permits that Florida Honors:

Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia, Wyoming,

... what I think NCarver meant was that Florida does not accept CCW permits from non-residents of those states.

For instance, Florida will accept a GA permit held by a GA resident, but will not accept an out-of-state GA permit held by a TN resident.

In which case, I believe he would be correct.

When I liced in southern Fl. years ago I had My CCW, but because of some problems while night fishing, I open carried with my cowboy rig. The only trouble I got was from the Marine patrol, who said I was asking for troublem packing open. My reply was I was advertizing that I didn't want trouble and I never had any problems carrying open as opposed to concealed.
