Should I get a CCP?

Currently I don't have a need to carry. Maybe in the future I will and at that time I can get a concealed carrying permit.

So if you were never going to carry it but only transport it to the firing range and back would you get a CCP?

I would rather allocate the money as of now to something more useful.

The only reason I would get a CCP is to be on the safe side just in case one day I won't be allowed in my state of Georgia to obtain one. Also I think they raised the price to $60 from $40 something.

The permit gives you options. It doesn't require you to carry, but allows you to carry when you feel you should, however frequent or infrequent that may be. Don't be surprised, though, if you find yourself carrying more and more as you become more comfortable with it.

Check your state laws about the issue of transporting your firearms to and from the range, but I am not aware of any states that require a permit to go to and from the range among those who do not forbid pistols completely. As I recall, Georgia is pretty friendly to guns, so if there are any exceptions I wouldn't expect it to be Georgia.

It is doubtful that any state would end permitting without rescinding existing permits, but again, unless you know something about the political situation that I don't, I wouldn't consider Georgia to be among those states likely to have any problems in the foreseeable future, anyway.

got mine to have the option and with some intent to get used to carrying, sitll haven't carried since I got my permit in Feb of this year, nice to know I have the option, though

another factor: in AL, my permit was only $10, I was able to fill out the form online and it was ready ridiculously quickly, compared to other stories I've read here - no brainer, really

maybe I will carry by the time I need to re-new, lol

My friend: What about you makes you so invincable, "you don't 'need' to cary?

That's an easy one to answer for myself. Without offending anyone It's simply that I'm the toughest most bulletproof sun of a gun in the entire world... Nobody would Dare to shoot at me and cause me to have the need to shoot back... Or first for that matter ;) :D

I personally got a CCW/LCC permit to ease the legality issue of transporting my firearms to and from the places I shoot at. The bonus is, the renewal costs are minimal around here and it's good for 5 years at a wallop.

I think I am going to get one even though I can hold my own against guys twice my size ;) What are the prices you guys are paying in your states. Georgia its $60.

WA is $55 with a possible ($25?) renewal every 5 years... I forget the amount a sit's every 5 years so I'm not overly concerned.

GA

is good for five years, or you can pay a bit more and get a 10 year license.

If you don't want the permit, that's your call, but if you can afford practice ammo these days, then the $60 fee for the permit shouldn't be that big a deal.

Is this really a question

Why wouldn't you get a CCP? Honor the sacrifices of those that have given everything so that you can have the right!Get your CCP!

Florida Or Tennesse

both Fl and Tn allow nonresidents to get permits. These two states permits are accepted in more states than my current state of residence including my home state. Florida accepts only Florida permits.
Go to nra ila page before getting a georgia permit

Currently I don't have a need to carry.

That may be and if that's what your heart of heart is saying then listen, but one usually finds out they need a carry after it's too late to plan for the moment.

Even if you "don't need to carry", you still enjoy shooting your gun. The way I see, the more people that exercise their rights to conceal carry, the stronger the gun community and its future are.

Even if you don't feel the need to carry to protect yourself, perhaps you can carry to protect the future of your gun rights?

You never know what may come your way. Having your CWP allows you a "choice". Without it, you have none. The class also goes over gun laws, all of which are very helpful. I think anyone that owns a gun should take a class on how to shoot. A CWP class is a good start.

Below is the Georgia statute which bears upon carrying a pistol without a license. It is vague about how a person without a license may transport a pistol from his home to a range legally assuming that they have neither a valid hunting or fishing license on their person. I think that this is enough reason to get a Georgia Firearms License.

O.C.G.A. § 16-11-128
Carrying pistol without license

(a) A person commits the offense of carrying a pistol without a license when he has or carries on or about his person, outside of his home, motor vehicle, or place of business, any pistol or revolver without having on his person a valid license issued by the judge of the probate court of the county in which he resides, provided that no permit shall be required for persons with a valid hunting or fishing license on their person or for persons not required by law to have hunting licenses who are engaged in legal hunting, fishing, or sport shooting when the persons have the permission of the owner of the land on which the activities are being conducted; provided, further, that the pistol or revolver, whenever loaded, shall be carried only in an open and fully exposed manner.

(b) Upon conviction of the offense of carrying a pistol without a license, a person shall be punished as follows:

(1) For the first offense, he shall be guilty of a misdemeanor; and

(2) For the second offense, and for any subsequent offense, he is guilty of a felony, and, upon conviction thereof, shall be imprisoned for not less than one year nor more than five years.

(c) On and after October 1, 1996, a person licensed to carry a handgun in any state whose laws recognize and give effect within such state to a license issued pursuant to this part shall be authorized to carry a handgun in this state, but only while the licensee is not a resident of this state; provided, however, that such license holder shall carry the handgun in compliance with the laws of this state.

I won't sit here and presume to tell another guy that he needs to carry if he chooses not so. I also won't go through the trouble of explaining why he might want to re-think that scenario.

But I will add some reasons why I think he should get his permit.

The biggest reason, outside of having the personal ability to legally carry, it to support the cause with numbers and votes. Adding yourself to the group of people that HAVE gotten the legal documentation adds to the raw number of people with their carry license.

In turn, that makes the group of a people a larger number-- a larger group. That gives the group more visibility and elected officials are forced to recognize the size and power of that group.

To further the thought... if you are a CCW holder and you also are not some crazy nutbar that ends up shooting up a nightclub or his family or a senior citizen's center, then your one single vote also shows the public on the fence that there's yet another normal, rational, patriotic and law abiding American citizen that values his rights and his abilities to live as a free man.

To go even further... another person with a CCW that perhaps one day elects to carry and uses his concealed handgun to defend himself or his family makes a firm stance against violent crime and forever alters the path of at least one bad guy-- whether the lawful defense with his firearm scares the guy away, puts him back in jail or ends his life & career, you can bet that the bad guy's path is forever altered. A bad guy that stared down the barrel of a gun when he picked the wrong victim is a bad guy that will at least THINK before the next time, even if just a bit.

Once again, it's a small bit on a large scale, but that tips the odds that there is one less bad guy in Georgia that I'm going to run in to when I am there.

Do my reasons sound silly or insignificant? They are really no more so than going to vote on election day.

Consider exercising your right to get the license and carry, much like exercising your right to vote and take part in the political process in our country.

And you are also correct about putting your guns in the car... there are many states where having the carry license gives you more freedom for simple range trips and my state is a perfect example of one of them.

I don't get the "I don't need to carry mindset." IMHO that is like saying "I don't need fire extinguishers in my house." You can not schedule an emergency or predict when SHTF. Just my opinion.

You do have fire extinguishers (plural) in your house, don't you?

I got my just so I didn't have that five day waiting period. But then after I got I figured may as well start to carry. So now never leave home without:D
