Should I buy a Ruger MK II ??????

Hi, Larz,

The votes seem to be going for the 5 1/2 inch bull barrel. That should tell you something. I like mine, too. It's about 35 years old and still shoots amazingly well. I have no idea how many rounds have been through it.

Ruger "Competition" MkII Pistol (KMK-678GC)

The Competition model resides at the top of the MkII "food chain". Paid $355 for one NIB two weeks ago at an Iowa gunshow. It comes with a base (shown) and 1" Ruger rings (mail the rings back to Ruger, for 5 bucks they'll send you new 30mm rings and a longer base for mounting a dot sight).

On the other end a blue 4" 22/45 will run around $199. No right or wrong picks, all are fantastic guns and excellent values. The only thing I can't figure out is why I waited so long to get one. I think the practical difference between 5 1/2" and 6 7/8" is about nil, either one is about optimum. The 10" is a specialty gun, get that one for your second Mk II. -- Kernel

One more vote for the MKII - I have the KMK-678 model (Govt. Stainless - 6 7/8" slabside ) - it comes pre-tapped for a scope mount and includes 1" rings. I haven't scoped it yet, but plan on getting a 2x Swift scope soon (they are supposed to be high quality for the $$$ - anyone heard otherwise?) - Contrary to what others say, I haven't had much problem stripping the gun for cleaning. Once you understand the assembly procedure it is fast and doesn't require any special tools (a paper clip helps to lift the spring on the grip). There are tons of options for upgrading the trigger or grips. I like the contour wood grips that came with mine, you can order them separately though.. I might try the Houge grips with the finger grooves too, they are less than $20. Have fun shooting, it sure is cheaper than my Makarov to shoot. If you are interested in .22's you might try www.22world.com - they need the extra traffic over there.

I bought a Ruger MKII 678 competition model for the same reason you mentioned. I had a bit of trouble with ammo, so I had to try different kinds at first. It now shoots the Remington Golden Bullets just fine. I bought a UltraDot scope to put on it, but after a while it just got too easy, so now I'm back to iron sights. The cleaning is really no big deal at all, once you get the hang of it...

22/45 4" Target was the best $175.00 (new) I've ever spent. Crisp 3 pound trigger right out of the box, accurate, reliable, fun to shoot, and about as versatile as an auto pistol can be. Are there better .22 auto pistols to consider...? Who cares!

And as an added bonus, (as if you need one) Bill Ruger isn't a cowardly little sellout whore, a turncoat traitor, or a price gouging crook. Ruger stands for value!
Happy shooting,
SM

I'll put in another vote for the competition model with the 6 7/8" barrel (KMK-678GC). I love mine, it's a beautiful gun and WAY more accurate than I am. I have had some jamming problems, the worst has been CCI Stingers (too bad, too, I kind of like the way they shot out of it...), but I have yet to have a single jam with anything from Remington. Someday I'll put the included scope rings to use...all in good time
