Should I buy a Colt Python and why not$

I find it funny that folks percieve that a python is expensive. To me it was one of my cheaper revolvers. Try buying a pre-war 38/44 heavy duty, or a 38/44 outdoorsman. Try to find a nice Registered Magnum or a good condition Triple Lock Target for the price of a Python.

I like my Python. It is a good gun, accurate and reliable. But, it is not a very expensive gun in the grand scheme of things.
 
I guess it's a matter of being prepared to take the time and trouble to keep your Colt running well.
Alas, I am too lazy, or too busy, to go to those lengths.

It's all a matter of maintenace. The work required to bring the old Colt action up to speed is not often required, but the checking should be part of your cleaning routine. It's no different than S&W owners having to check ejector rod heads and strain screws to make sure they haven't backed out or end play to see if shims are needed for correction. It's just 2 different machines with their own set of maintenace requirements.

Peter I don't think that's comparing apples to apples. Although the Python has the old action you can get one built fairly recently and they are commonly found. The vintage and the lack of great numbers of the RM and TL also drive their prices up. Those grand old S&W are in the same ballpark as the New Service Targets or the Shooting Masters by Colt. There just isn't enough of them around for everyone to have one in their collections.
 
Agreed, but the "collectable" pythons are starting to head that way. I recently passed up on an early python that had the lug drilled out still. I kind of regret letting that one go by.

The problem is perspective. If you are comparing the Python to a Ruger, yes it is expensive, if you are comparing the Python to a 38/44 Outdoorsman then the Python's tend to be pretty cheap.
 
I have been wanting a High Gloss Stainless Steel Colt Python 4" since the first time I had seen one.
