Shotgun Muzzlebrake...?

I want larger groups in a tactical/HD gun, not smaller ones

This will give you that.

put a rifle choke in your close range HD gun and you will get a nice big pattern.

Muzzle rise is related to recoil. Straight stocks(?English?) have less muzzle rise but more felt recoil. Look up the stoeger website and look at the difference of the stocks and you will be able to see what I am talking about.
I don't think your muzzle rise on a pump shotgun is going to be significant as you are going to move off target when you pump anyways. If you want to be fast with a shotgun it takes a lot of rounds. I don't consciously form a sight picture with my shotguns anymore. It is all muscle memory and "feeling." When I shoulder that gun everything lines up and I pull the trigger.

Silent ... When Lee Lapin takes the time to answer your shotgun questions, you might wanna take his advice. He's forgotten more about them than you and I will ever know.

(He's 117 years old, too. :D )

Same goes for Dave McC, but I think Dave is 119 IIRC.

Just a thought, since you are talking about a pump shotgun you still have to rack the next round in before you can fire again. I would think that if you are trying to fire at a rate so fast that it would make a difference to have the barrel ported, you would have to be awful quick and steady while racking in the next round.

Shoot. You want to be impressed by somebody, listen to Dave. He's dropped more shotgun shells than I've ever fired.

So if I'm understanding you correctly, porting will make a slight difference, but I may or may not notice it so it's probably not worth my time? Was the article about the FN pump w/ a ported barrel hogwash then, or did the author of the article just attribute the lack of muzzle rise to the wrong feature? I can't remember a whole lot about the gun off hand, but I know it also had a collapsible stock and AR style sights. Would the either of those features affect muzzle rise in any way? The author of the article spent a decent amount of time ranting about the lack of muzzle rise, and that made me want to know what was so magical about the FN, and if it could be applied to a gun that wasn't so ugly.

Not 110, though I feel like it some days.....

I've shot a variety of OP's shotguns lately. Some had ports, some had ported chokes. Can't feel a difference in kick, or tell any in muzzle rise or lack thereof.

Porting a gun can run up to about $350 now. $350 of ammo and range fees, or less ammo and a lesson or two with decent instructors can definitely improve one's shooting.

And improving one's technique WILL reduce muzzle jump.

Trust me....

This 590 has 20" Accu Choke barrel. Tuneable , hunting ,clay birds , HD etc.

Get one that you can change choke tubes. You'll get much, much more use out of it.

True, UNLESS you have a Mossberg. They have an incredible offer: Porting or refinishing for $35 or both for $65. link

Youbetcha, changing the stock can have a significant effect on muzzle rise. The reason ARs have straight stocks and high sights is to reduce the eccentricity between the line of the bore and the center of the reaction. The laws of physics say, reduce the eccentricity and you reduce the muzzle rise. In reality, if you could fashion a gun that had a negative eccentricity, then you'd get a muzzle drop.

Thanks zippy! I guess I'll have to keep my eye out for a straight stock then. Most of the ones I've seen for shotguns have some degree of drop, I guess due to the typically low sights.

Buy a used Mossberg cut 4" off the barrel and load it with OO Buck X 5 = Good Home Defense!
