Shot my new High Power...

What a fun gun!

I put about 120 rounds through it before my thumbs gave out.

It was extremely accurate. With slow, deliberate fire, it was no problem to put 10 rounds in the size of a clenched fist at 10 yards.

I really think this one is a keeper.

Boing,

My fist (or the back of my hand is really what I'm thinking of, when my fingers are clenched) is about the size of a deck of cards.

Sam,

I decided to just load 10 rounds, or 2 rows of the box. I'll load 13 some other time.

Navy Joe,

Trust me, I've considered flipping it. I think I'm going to get rid of the Beretta, though, instead.

sounds great.

Without a mag loader, I don't shoot, lol. I'll never forget when i first picked up my sig (my first handgun). 100 rounds later my thumb was screaming. I remember saying to myself.. nice going stupid... bet you didn't plan on this side effect. Well, went out to talk to the range manager, aside from laughing, he pointed me to the HK loader for $7. Best damn $7 I ever spent.

Get yourself some 17 rounders from CDNN, they come with a loader. I only load 15 rounds anyway and I don`t use em on the street.

Then the night before you go shooting, rent a movie or find something on TV and load mags. I have at least 10 mags for all my autos. I know that gets expensive but reloading mags at the range is a pain. Maybe buy a couple a month.

I got loaded pistol and rifle mags, en bloc clips and ammo all over the place. I must be nuts.:)

I have 5 Hi Powers. I really only shoot 2. One is a .40 so I have to be careful as the mags can be swapped if I`m not paying attention.

Your Hi Power will only go up in value. Check some of the prices they`re getting for used MK IIIs on the net now. If you can find a nice T series, you`ll get sticker shock. Enjoy.

croyance - you mentioned the gritty trigger. I know exactly what you mean. I lessen it by polishing the magazine, on the side that contacts the disconnect. I usually do it every time I shoot. It works for me.

Mike: how did your thumbs give out? The grip I was taught for autos is to squeeze the front and rear backstrap with the right hand and use the fingers of the left hand to clamp left-to-right across the right hand. The thumbs are supposed to be just along for the ride (no pressure applied with them). If your thumbs are getting tired, they must be doing something?

Congratulations Mike. If you think you have a shooter now, get a trigger job, dump the magazine safety and get some Spegel grips. High Powers are just one of those pistols that are "right."

Gritty trigger on a BHP? Two things that will help. One anyone can do, 'tother, you need some skills.

1. Try a magazine with a better surface. The mag disconnect "drags" across the surface of the mag as the trigger is pulled. Rough mag surface=rough trigger pull. I lucked into a used Browning mag that had been polished where the disconnect rubs. Noticeable improvement. Best "out of box" feel that I have found is the $20 KRD 17rnd mags from www.cdnninvestments.com. They have a very smooth finish.

2. Take out the mag disconnect. Requires some punches and skill. I have not done it, but doesn't look too hard for a tinkerer. Go to www.fnhipower.com, and check out the FAQ's. You'll find instructions.

Mike,

Congrats on the new HP. I have found that mine likes Silvertips and can group best with them, pretty much to POA out to at least 45-50'.

I'll bet that with work and practise that you can reduce the size of your clenched fist.

Ah yes, another BHP convert! Best handling pistol I've shot, just feels right in your hand. Take the advice and go to fnhipower.com and learn how to remove the mag safety (which I've done to 3 of mine so far. All you need are 2 punches basically and the instructions you can get there. BUT, make sure you accept the implications of removing this "safety" feature). You can also polish the faces of the mags too as suggested by others. Other than silver bear JHP ammo, mine have shot virtually every FMJ and JHP available. You should easily be able to do 3 inch groups at 50 ft with practice. Enjoy!

PS. and if you really don't like it, I'll make a sacrifice just this once and help you out !!

BHP's are fine pistols - I regularly shoot a Mk III (my usual carry piece) in IDPA matches. I added Spegel grips and removed the %$@! magazine disconnect and am very happy with it.

Mike,

There's nothing like shooting a Browning Hi-Power. I sure
hate that I recently sold my BHP "Practical" model in 9m/m.
That gun was awesome.

Bounty,

John Will has it correct. My thumbs gave out from loading the magazines.

The web part of my palm also took a beating, as the grips really don't like that area of my hand. I'm thinking about getting a set of thin smooth grips for it.

Any suggestions?

Hank has it right- get a set of Spegel grips

Brownells used to carry Spegel grips, but the last year or so Cylinder and Slide is the only place I can find on-line to buy them.

Spegel grips are the best made. Even though they're checkered, they feel smooth.

Mag Disconnect alternative:
Take a piece of 1200-1600 grit wet/dry sandpaper and polish the face of the magazine where the plunger makes contact. Wrap a small piece f the wet/dry around a dowel rod or a pencil and polish the face of the plunger. Use a polyflourocarbon(sp) based grease, like DSX and a drop of light oil like RemOil on each surface. Dry fire a few hundred times. This won't lighten the trigger, but it smooths it out very well.
