Shortening a barrel and Accuracy ??

dvdcrr suggests:
what you do () is take the barrel off the action. Then hold it in your hand and bounce a softball off it several times to find the sweet spot (no vibration). Mark it and cut it at that length as long as its longer than 16. Oh come on somebody's gotta try it!
With a barrel unscrewed from the receiver, it'll have two nodes or places where it doesn't vibrate. Each one's about 1/5th the way from each end.

Note that barrels in actions screwed into stocks vibrate differently at their base or fundamental frequency than barrels by themselves. And at different frequencies, too. Barrels alone vibrate about 3 to 4 times higher in frequency than when in receivers.

A barrel vibrates the same frequency for every shot fired. Whatever its fundamental vibrating frequency is, that's what it wiggles at every time it's fired. The metal doesn't change nor does its dimensions, so the frequency stays the same.
Correct. Of course, if the barrel's dimensions change (as when it is shortened) then the frequency of vibration does change.

Well after much debate, and everyones input weighed in here I decided on a Rermington 700 SPS Varmint .308(Bull Barrel)....The nearest full service gunsmith/shop I could find was about 2 hours from me,not bad....I am having the barrel cut down to 18" with a target crown cut in.....The guy just happens to be a huge Remington dealer,so I got what I think was a good deal....I already had a scope, rings and base.......The rifle, new, the work on the barrel and mounting/boresighting the scope came to $640.00,so I think I made out fairly well....! Now since I am in a wheelchair I can't wait for the ground to harden up so I can get out and shoot it.....Thanks again everyone for your invaluable input and suggestions...!

Sounds like a good choice and a good deal. Let us know how it works out. I've been thinking of buying that same rifle for a while now, just haven't had the funds.

You are good to go, good well thought out choice at a fair price me thinks

Solid ground and good shooting to you (or you could come up to Alaska, our ground will be solid for a while longer!)

Alaska....I wish !! Thank you for your vote of confidence....I think it is going to work out well...:)
@Sap.....No rest on the chair,I bought a Harris 6-9 BR bipod,so I am going to work with that......Your right,I haven't met the guy yet (gunsmith)but yes,he has been VERY helpful and I would reccomend him to anyone.....Him and his son own the place,David & Dennis Klotz.....DaMar Gunsmithing in Weedsport,NY.....
