I'm gonna update my choices, with preferred in bold.

1. Short range ==> .22lr
2. Medium range ===> .17 hmr, .17 M2, .22 hornet, or .218 bee
3. Long range ===> .223 rem, .222 rem, or .221 fireball
4. Very long range ==> .22-250, .204 ruger, or .243 win / 6mm rem (lighter bullets)
5. Extreme ranges ==> .243 / 6mm (heavier bullets), .257 roberts, or .25-'06 rem.

6. The dreaded fire-breathing, sharp-fanged, armor-plated Texas jackalope at 1,000 yards ==> .338 lapua magnum
 
Varmint Rounds

Short Range -- .22LR CCI Hollow Points

Medium Range -- .270 Win. Hand Loaded 100 gr. Hollow Points (a.k.a. Prarie Dog RPG's)

Long Range -- .243 Win. 55 gr. Winchester Balistic Silvertips
 
i have a .204 ruger, i shoot a 32 grain hornady v-max bullet. i havent killed anything with it yet because i just got it but the guy at the gun shop told me that it could kill a deer from 75 yards if you shoot it in the heart or lungs. ive shot through 3 inches of plywood from 50 yards with it if that helps any.its a great little gun, it will kill a varmint from about 600 yards.
