Short Colt .45 brass

If correctly assembled, shorter rounds are ok to use, and cause no problems, if the guns are properly cleaned afterwards. One hears (endlessly on the internet it seems) about the "crud ring" in .357 chambers after shooting .38 Specials, interfering with chambering the longer cases.

I've never personally had that problem, but its a possibility.

As to shorter cases being ok to shoot, consider the .45 Schofield. It works just fine in .45 Colt chambers, and eventually became the Army standard round for both the Schofield AND the Colt SAA. The Schofield case is listed as 1.1" length.
