Short CCL Processing Time

I went to the county sheriffs office today to get a few pistol permits and I saw a sign stating that the processing time for a CCL is 5 days! I was amazed, especially since I have heard of wait times of up to 90 days. This is in Davidson county, NC. Once I can figure out how to hide $200 from my wife ($100 for the class and $92 for the license), I am getting my CCL.

Yep, in NC you must obtain a permit for each handgun that you wish to purchase from the county sheriffs office in the county that you reside in. With a CCL you do not need a separate permit to purchase handguns.

Iowa is the same except that you buy a permit and it's good for one year. That's to purchase a handgun. Forget trying to get a CC as the sherrif is the only and final say in who gets a permit in the county you live in.

Good for five

In NC a pistol permit is good for five years. That is why I went ahead and applied for three. Right now I only need one but I certainly will use up the other two within five years, probably within one year.

@MTHanded: NC is a "shall-issue" state, meaning that as long as you complete the class, fill out the paperwork correctly, and (basically) don't have a criminal record the sheriff can't deny your CCL. Lucky us.

@Geek-With-A-Gun: Why not go ahead and get the max of 4 and save having to fill out those annoying forms again?

Yup, I think Northern VA runs about as much time. Getting something that's your right should not take this long. :(

Conversely (and ironically) it took 9 months to get my Kentucky CC permit.

6 months residency status, 1 month to take the course (booked solid) and another two to receive it. Longer for my friend as they had to do a little more background searching on her.

We have a 90 day maximum wait in NC, some depts take the whole 90, reports I've heard seem that most take 45-60. Five days is a great deal, my county is known to take the whole 90. We are a shall issue state, but we have a more rigorous application process than many. That being said, our permits are also quite widely accepted. Better than some states I suppose.

I'm told it takes 60-days here in Indiana to obtain a permit to carry. Well, technically it's more like 65 - the first five days for the local authorities to conduct background checks and then 60-days for the state police to actually issue the permit.

I just mailed it to the state today, so we'll see.

Check me if I missed something or not understanding the posts. Aren't we talking about two kinds of permits, one that allows you to buy and the other allows you to carry? I know that is the way it is in many states but probably does not apply to all states. As noted, in Iowa, you buy one Purchasing Permit each year for about $5.00 and the waiting period is three days. This permit does not authorize you to carry as that is a separate permit.

Be Safe !!!

when i took my cc class here in texas i was told by the instructor it could take six months to get the lic. back, but less than 30 days after i mailed it i recieved my cc permit. and that was after one week delay because i didn't send a copy of my dd214 so i could get the half price deal for being a vet.

my ccw

it took rockingham county/ the city of hburg a full 45 days to get my little piece of paper.

in my home county if you go on the right day you get the permit before toy leave the court house.

Indiana all ya have to have is the money to buy a gun, no permits required! As far as CC of course ya have to have a permit, but for a hundred bucks ya can get a lifetime CC permit and be good to go forever, makes it nice not having to renew every few years

In Alabama no permits required to buy and no waiting period. Concealed carry is issued by each county sheriff and where I live its $20/yr and no course is required (but one is available).
