Sheriff says NO!

Our Sheriff will NOT allow a S/A to go on your CCW permit.
Scared to ask why.
I'd planned to carry my Nickle .357 Vaquero, but no.

Ask !!!

Don't know why you would be but you might just find that there is a good reason, by his measure. You did not list your state but in our county SA use is discouraged. In fact some prefer semi-auto. If you show up with a DA 6-shot, then you have to use speed loaders during qualifications, next to the guy that is swapping magazines, during a timed shoot. SA is not as effective as DA or semis. You have a valid question that deserves a good answer. ... ;)

I do not know what state you are in, but here in Michigan the CCW permit allows one to carry a concealed handgun...but does not specify which type.

I don't know the answer but I don't believe wisconsin cares what you use.

Beyond that it's probably because S/A's look better open carried in a good leather gunbelt. But then again I have been watching westerns all week.

I don't know the Government Employee Logic for sure, but I might guess that they consider the SA to be either obsolete or hard to run at modern gunfight conditions. I have known a few people I consider adequately skilled, but not a lot. Maybe some CAS types who do some work with full power ammo.

In California, CCWs are issued by the County Sheriff where you maintain your residence, and under the discretion granted to them by the state, can decide what guns you may or may not be allowed to list on your permit, including the number of guns you may list. For example, the front of the permit has room to list only three guns, so some sheriffs will only allow you to list three, while others will list more on the back. Others will not approve anything smaller than .380 or larger than .45. Mechanical modifications are frowned upon or prohibited.

so sad that people have let the state governments get away with stuff like that. here if your legally eligible for a carry permit, then you are deemed competent enough to use the gun of your choosing. not sure why people feel the world is a safer place if some can't carry SAO pistols, seems like a strange rule.

Amen! Hartcreek,

sounds like the sheriff is making his own laws up as he goes along. Call your sheriffs department and ask for the code number of the law that specifies the action type that may be used.

Most do.
Mine even allows me to carry a concealed spear, cannon, or tactical laser. ...But what we can carry in our states doesn't really matter to the OP. He's stuck in a place that still has its head buried in the sand.

I take it "S/A" in this context means single action, not semi-automatic?

Is this just for revolvers? What about 1911s? What about the many semi-autos that are SA/DA? Like a CZ-75B, which can be carried so it's DA for the first shot, but can also be carried cocked and locked if preferred?

I think this policy needs to be challenged in court. Don't know the language of the state law regarding carry permits, but I doubt that it gives the issuing authority to right to prohibit carry of certain types of firearms.

Range Qualifications !!!

I do not know what state you are in, but here in Michigan the CCW permit allows one to carry a concealed handgun...
I think that this is probably true, "once" you get your permit. Now, there are a couple of avenues on being approved and one of them, is "Range" qualification. ....

One range officer, that I know, would not allow .22-Cal. or any reloads. Had to bring a min of 250-rounds. Don't know where he stands on SA handguns as it was not brought out but was very discouraging on DA revolvers, that is for the qualification phase. Once you get your permit, the permit does not exclude anything.

There are other ways to obtain the permit and the easiest for our state's requirement, is to produce a DD-214 to you local Sherriff's office and pay $50.00. Painless and no restrictions on what you carry ....

Dropping the Gun

When SAA's first came out and it went on for many years, people learned to put only five rounds in their six shooter because if you dropped the gun and the hammer is on a live round, it would most likely fire. So they kept one chamber empty and carried with the hammer on the empty chamber and that solved the problem. Whether that has been fixed or not, I don't know but some of the wiser men on here, I hope, will comment on it. By all means you should ask why he will not approve it!

On the DD-214 note....
When I got my CC license in Idaho (resident), I took my DD-214 down for the application filing and fingerprinting appointment.
When it seemed like they weren't going to ask about qualification/familiarization, I asked if they wanted to see the DD-214 or the Hunters' Education certificate in my wallet (also acceptable).

"No. We don't need that. Everybody around here takes Hunters' Ed., and we'll take your word for it on being military. But we do need you to check the box for it."

Okay...

I think I would check with the state, instead of the sheriff, to see if it's legal or not.
In Texas, it states revolver, or semi auto.
It doesn't mention anything about single action revolvers not being legal.

To elaborate, revolver only covers revolvers on your permit in TX. Do not take your class with a revolver or the instructor could restrict your permit (I don't think they would). Use an auto that holds at least 10 rounds. The guy next to me brought a 1911 and the instructor had him do things like load one mag with 6 and another with 4, due to the timed shoots. Oddly semi-auto on your license, covers both.
