Shaving cream for cleaning your gun?

My question is: Why? Why would I use shaving cream for cleaning my guns when shaving cream is for, well, shaving? Even as a last resort, I could probably find something better in the shop.

I have never used it for cleaning guns. I doubt I ever will.

It does however work for cleaning, and conditioning baseball gloves, and saddles. In a pinch works to clean off dirty boots, wipe them off with a damp rag afterwards.

I don't think anyone can get carbon tet anymore, its carcinogenic, depletes the ozone or something, heats up the planet and does all sorts of bad stuff, but replace one of the Chlorine atoms with hydrogen, add another carbon atom and you have Trichloroethylene, which a lot of people use to clean their guns with in the form of brake cleaner, carb cleaner and EEZOX.

And here is my schpeel about chlorinated ester rotting stainless steel:

Chlorinated esters or chlorinated hydrocarbons have been shown to cause chloride stress corrosion cracking.

shaving cream works!

It absoloutly does, I used it in Basic training a number of years back to clean my M4 after every range time. I still use it to clean various rifles of mine after I go to the range/when i really need to get down into some hard to reach spots. as far getting it off when your done, I don't know about y'all but I don't own a single gun I fear to get around water so I simply rinse it off and apply a light lubricant after.

:rolleyes: Damn . . . I'm 60 and I'm still learning new things . . this forum neveer ceases to amaze me!!

Now that you've got me all fired up about shaving cream - I have a full beard by the way . . .

WOULD SOMEONE OUT THERE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT KIND TO GET TO CLEAN MY GUNS?????

Regular or Menthol?? :D:D:rolleyes::D

This thread jogged my memory of basic training in 1963 at Fort Jackson, SC. Lots of guys would scrub their M-14s with whatever they had and take their rifles into a hot shower for a rinse. I don't recall anybody using shaving cream, but many had "secret cleaning agents" squirreled away for deep cleaning just before an inspection. No, I didn't take my rifle into the shower. My dad would have screwed his head into the ceiling if he knew I had done that.

The threads about using shaving cream to clean firearms were entertaining, though.:)

Just to really twist things up, I've known guys who clean their bores with toothpaste, plain old Crest or Colgate toothpaste.

Nothing wrong with economizing your chemicals during hard times. Poor man technologies can save you some dough. I'm a long time user of Simple Green on guns. It works great. It is a degreaser so re-oil promptly after cleaning.

I hadn't heard of shaving cream but is makes sense and sounds like a good idea. Heck, I bet Scrubbing Bubbles would work good also to clean guns.
