"ORLANDO, Fla. -

Shaquille O'Neal was present during a botched child pornography raid last month while working in Virginia as a reserve sheriff's deputy, a Bedford County Sheriff's officer said.

The Miami Heat center, who pursues his interest in law enforcement during the offseason, denied Tuesday taking part in serving the search warrant at the wrong house Sept. 23. However, Bedford County Sheriff's Lt. Michael Harmony confirmed to The Associated Press that O'Neal was there.

O'Neal, in Orlando to play a preseason game Tuesday, was asked about the raid and several times somewhat playfully responded, "It wasn't me."

The 13-time All-Star has expressed an interest in becoming a Bedford deputy or sheriff somewhere else after his NBA career ends. He also works as a firearms-certified reserve police officer in Miami Beach.

"Of course, being sheriff is a seasoned political position, so we're not going to be out there knocking down the wrong doors," he said. "We just have to do the right thing."

A.J. Nuckols, who said his family has filed formal complaints, wrote in a letter published in the Chatham Star-Tribune that the raid at his Gretna, Va., home scared him and his family "beyond description."

He described being "held at gunpoint, taunted and led into the house," and said the home was ransacked by a "paramilitary search-and-seizure team" that took computers, cameras, DVDs and VHS tapes.

Nuckols said in a phone interview that he heard O'Neal was at his home, but didn't specifically see the 7-foot-1, 325-pound All-Star in all the commotion.

Authorities later realized they had been given the wrong IP address, which Internet service providers can use to identify users, leading them to the wrong physical address, Harmony said. It was the Internet company's mistake, he said.

Harmony said the sheriff's office apologized, but Nuckols mischaracterized the incident. Harmony said officers were wearing bulletproof vests and may have been in dark or camouflaged clothing, but were not carrying assault rifles or wearing helmets.

He said the sheriff's office conducted a successful search on the correct home Friday, finding child pornography and securing a statement from a man saying he knowingly distributed it.

The Bedford Sheriff's Office enlisted O'Neal to be the spokesman and public face of its anti-child pornography and child predator campaign, making him a deputy last year.

Harmony said O'Neal had been on previous search warrant executions."

Since when does the mere fact that one is a part time or a full time cop justify the term JBT, even under circumstances as described in the media (which may or not be true or exaggerated)

JBT. Sheeple. Demonkrats. Kalifornia...what the **** is going on around here. Dont y'all ever get tired of the silly posturing?

From what little I've been able to glean, Shaq seems like a pretty good guy. I'm sure he'd make a good cop too. I just have trouble envisioning him working undercover...:D

I wasn't trying to bash him, or even the department. It says in the article that the ISP gave them the wrong IP address, leading to the incorrect house being "raided".

The only thing it does for me is reinforce that this kind of warrant execution needs to happen only in very specific circumstances. I believe that in the vast majority of these, an arrest warrant and search warrant can be issued. Arrest the person in their driveway when they leave, or elsewhere. Then conduct the search. The kiddie-porn guy (unless his record says otherwise) is probably not going to react violently to his arrest. There are risks involved that way too, but I think the chance for a mistake, as in this case, outweighs the risk of doing it the other way in many instances.

Hey, Wild -

I just read your "gnarly" post. When reading any post on a forum where I'm a regular, I consider the source and that person's internet personality. You can check my posts, and see I'm not a regular poster of the JBT/Kalifornia/sheeple cliches that are oft used. I have used a few of them, but I keep them to a minimum, and use them when I believe that they truly fit the discussion.

on a non-gnarly point...

...

....you'd think he'd be real hard to miss!!!!! (If he WAS there).

Unless all their deputies are 7'1" and 325 pounds.

"Unfortunately, stuff happens."

It's easier to say "stuff happens" until you're the one it happens to. When it's a HUGE problem if stuff happens, like a raid on someone's home, the benefit needs to outweigh the possible consequences. I'd say that apprehending the local perv elsewhere (you know, like when he's hanging around the elementary school :barf: ) and then searching and seizing is still the way to go.

Well I reckon if you take the number of search warrants executed each year and divide that by the number of wrong house problems, you'd probably get about .05%

Errors cost money. That bad raid is worth about $50,000.

If we changed the rules to eliminate something every time an error was made we'd all be walking and there would be no surgery.

I say Shaq should stick with basketball. I am from Miami and I want to see a repeat NBA championship. If Shaq were to get injured playing cop, that would really hurt the team. He gets millions a year to play... not sit out because of injuries!

He can play cop all he wants after he retires. He is a really good guy and does a lot for the community though. He buys inner city kids a trailer full of toys each Christmas. I think he also gives basketball seminars along with other Heat players to inner city youth.

In my oipnion, there is so much more he can do for the community that to be a police officer.

I would agree, except that in the case of JBT raids (I said that just for ya!), there are sometimes better alternatives. There's risk in everything, for sure. Why not exercise those options when you have them?

too bad the mongoloid man-child did not get shot in the rear.

   Appalling. Your post, not the fact that someone managed to not get shot. This ties with the picture of the guy who's face was blown half off for the Worst Taste Award.

My daughter just pointed out that if Shaq ever gets to the position where he's writing traffic tickets they'll become instant collector's items.

if he shoots guns like he shoots free-throws he will injure himself eventually.

I don't know about you guys, but that was just hilarious!:D

I really think he should stick to basketball. He lives a good life, he doesn't need to get himself into danger and possibly cripple himself.

EDIT:
And JBT means Jack-Booted Thug. I think? Or just Jack Boot Thug?
