Serious Concerns About WalMart's Gun Counter

It seems like some people think that walmart should give you the third degree about you firearms prior to selling you any ammo IE it does not make sense that my normal ammo purchases are 1 box 9mm 3 boxes 22lr or 5 boxes 12ga and 5 boxes 20 ga. I guess they should not sell me 20 ga at the same time as 12ga because 20 ga amm can cause a kaboom in a 12ga gun. They dont know what guns I am buying ammo for and it is not any of their bussiness. I can remember being asked what gun I was going to shoot 22lr ammo in because if it was going in a handgun I could not buy it (under 21 at that time) Randy

Anyway, There were two college kids working the counter, a guy and a girl. I asked to see a few things, and through various miscommunications, it became apparent to me that these two were NOT that familiar with firearms or ammunition. Not a problem, I know enough to make informed decisions.

Hey, you were in Walmart! Not Robbie's Professional Shooters' Den.:)

If a couple college kids did know as much as you about firearms than you, that would be a little embarassing. Wouldn't it? Not to mention extremely unusual.

Once asked for some Glaser Safety slugs in a store with an experienced manager. He said he didn't have any Glasers, but handed me some snake shot and said they were just as good. I know he knew better. Just thought he could put one over on a dumb customer and make a sale. Knowledgeable gun folks behind the counter aren't always our friends.

Some poor gal looking for a good SD load, having trusted an employee behind the counter, would have walked out with worthless ammo that could have gotten her killed. Not to pick on women. Could have been a man.

Lesson learned: Come what may, you're on your own on the street and at Walmart.;)

Ok!! Geez!!! I get it!! Wal Mart is great!! Yay Wal Mart!!! I'm going to go build an alter in my backyard so I can make ritual sacrifices to the memory of Sam Walton!! Gimme a W...Gimme an A...Gimme an L...Come on, you guys know the cheer right?!

Wowza. I never knew there were so many Wal Mart groupies who knew how to type.

Just for the record, I don't hate Wal Mart. Nor do I, as some of you seem to think I should, think Wal Mart is infallible. Mentioning that Wal Mart should do one thing differently is not the same thing as burning a flag or defacing a house of worship. It's not heresy to mention the possibilty that Wal Mart may, just conceivably, not be perfect. I didn't know discount retail shopping was such a hot button issue. Can we talk about something a bit less controversial, like Palestinian politics? Would that please you?

Everyone just take a step back, take a deep breath, and perhaps have some prune juice and ExLax. It'll be okay once your bowels start to move again.

Brasscatcher84, I don't think there are many Wal-Mart fans in this crowd. I'm not a fan, by any means. The hornets' nest you stirred up wasn't the defenders of Wal-Mart, it was the proponents of individual responsibility.

Not nearly the amount they did when Sam Walton was alive. Remember how he used to PROUDLY have the employees of the manufacturers of products made in the USA on his commercials? What happened to that? It doens't take a genius to figure out once Sam died his idea of selling USA made products cheaper went out the window as the new management teams sought cheaper products with higher profit margins.

When Sam was alive, most of the companies still MADE their stuff here - after dealing with his accountants, they could only afford to do it by moving things offshore - called a self-fulfilling prophesy...............now the value of our dollar makes things here more economic sense

MLeake, your statement divides opinions into those who think Wal Mart is wrong to have unknowledgable people working the gun counter, and proponents of individual responsibility.

Believe it or not, there are people (I'm one!) who fall into both categories. Having a certain opinion doesn't give you a moral monopoly on individual responsibilty.

As a matter of fact, a truly responsible individual will recognize that there are those who are not responsible, and will seek to mitigate the harm that these less responsible people will inflict on themselves and others. This is where Wal Mart should be. A lot of people go to there local gun stores with questions, and the personnel there will generally be some help. A person who mistakenly believes that Wal Mart is anything but a hawker of cheap goods just deserves to be out of luck, I guess? Foolish, foolish buffoons trying to empower themselves by purchasing a firearm! HA!! Who do they think they are?! Don't they know that firearms are the exclusive domain of armchair commandos with really cool screen names? Oh, well. If they are unknowledgable about The Craft, and they do harm to themselves or innocent bystanders, that's there own fault.

What a way to expand support for America's shooting culture.

Guess you don't know retail - it is no different at Dick's or Gander Mountain or Cabela's - places that actively sell guns yet still have counter help who are used to stocking sport shoes than anything else

that's the way retail works - you go from department to department depending on the crowd - if you expect expert advices from stores with multiple departments, you are sorely mistaken

"Guess you don't know retail"

How come people always assume that when someone disagrees with them, it's because of ignorance? Are there really THAT many people who've led such a sheltered existence that they've seriously never encountered a person just as intelligent (or more) as them, with just as much (or more) information, who also holds a different opinion?

Do people think that on the internet, it's just acceptable to sound like a snide, superior, condascending jerk?

No one said anything about your intelligence or lack thereof - but since you skirted the statement, I guess it stands as true. As someone who has worked retail and owned a retail store, folks' schedules vary day to day and one moment you are the expert in housewares, and the next they are handing you the keys to gun cabinet

If you are expecting expertise at a location like wally world, I guess you don't know retail.....;)

Brasscatcher84, you seem to be taking things awfully personally.

But, with regards to your general position - Wal-Mart is a general store. It's not Lowe's or Home Depot, with an emphasis on hardware and a practice of hiring employees who know how to use the products. It's not REI, where company practice is to encourage employees to take the floor/demo items out on their days off and try them out, so they can tell customers firsthand how the products work.

It's also not a specialty gun shop.

It's a general store, of the big box model, that moves employees around from section to section to fill in gaps as necessary.

I'm not sure why you would expect anything different from them, based on their business model.

Employees who really understand guns and can sell them effectively probably don't stay there; they probably go to gun shops (or at least sporting goods shops with a heavy gun emphasis, like Cabela's) where they will be paid better and where their opinions and expertise may actually be sought out.
