Kaboom, this was the GOP strategy against Clinton for close to eight years, and it didn't work. People now regard scandal-mongering as a political tactic chosen because the candidate can't be beat on the issues, or his job performance.
Perata reflects the views of the majority of his voting constituents -- otherwise he wouldn't be a senator. If we want to get rid of Perata, we need to focus on his constituents and get a sufficient number of them to change _their_ attitudes.
I like the idea of having lots of people put up "the cost of the gun you want to buy this year but don't really need" for getting rid of Perata, but instead of digging up dirt, we can use Citizens of America to wage a high-intensity pro-gun ad compaign in Perata's district, _before_ his election cycle begins (thereby avoiding the wrath of the powerful and capricious Calif. Fair Political Practices Commission). Once we get across the idea that guns are good for self-defense -- and anti-gun politicians are anti-self-defense -- the GOP can field a candidate who is pro-gun but otherwise looks to those voters like a slightly improved Perata.
If we can encourage a Green to run too, and split off the loony-left vote from Perata, so much the better.
This is how we get rid of the bastard, and do it without replacing him with a worse bastard.
