Semi Auto Self Defense Shotguns?

I just go with a good old fashioned pump. With practice you can squeeze off shots nearly as fast as with a semi.

There is a little less recoil, but shooting a slug still hurts just the same.

And at 6'0 235 lbs, recoil never bothered me too much :)

Forget the Saiga 12 for now ,the prices and availability are a problem. I a'm glad I got my 2 when the getting was good ( $300.00) each . mine run as well as my old Benelli m2. I moded both of mine to have the bolt hold open ,and they will run ANY ammo flawlessly . As far as fast reloads, I can reload fast with my 10 round AGP mags . If you need more than 10 rounds for HD ,you got a whole lot of trouble to begin with . That being the case I got 2 MD 20 round drums for $80.00 each 3 months ago (they are now $120.00 each). The Saiga haters can keep hateing ,I absolutely love mine .;)

Hey Nef, I have a Rem 11-87 turkey gun that doubles for home defense. I traded for it and am very pleased with it. Prolly could get one used.

I Would think any pump action would do, regardless of capacity. Just make sure your intruder is within earshot of the sound of a round being chambered. ;) He'll get the message, and you'll save on ammo and bleach.

Wishfull thinking WWWJD. Maybe in some situations the sound of a shotgun racking might cause a retreat, it doesn't in all. If someone is determined enough or drugged enough, the racking may just make them more determined.
A pump will work for the first shot, I think a semi automatic will allow you to follow-up faster.
That being said, I have a pump for home defense and feel perfectly fine with a pump in the home.

I would tend to agree; I can't imagine any need for a rapid follow up (more rapid than one could pull off with a pump). One target is on it's way to the floor, and a possible second is going to be involuntarily evacuating their bowels. Ehh... I've been debating a semi-auto 20 gauge. Less external moving parts.. easier and lighter recoil for my better half. To each his own.. there wouldn't be so many makes and models if nobody had their own preferences and budgetary concerns. :) Plus they're all fun!!

i would tend to agree with takticool. last time i raided a liquor store, the saiga 12 was great. but when the mob that owned the store came to my house at night.....wait....it was still great. because i had a ten round mag and never had to reload.

if you were in a situation where you needed to change the kind of round you were using, a tube would be great. that isnt the case with HD. you will most likely fire one, maybe two shots, and never have to reload, no matter what you are shooting (8 round tube or 20 round drum).

that said, the saiga is probably equal to any tube loader in HD.

but there are two other things to consider: number one, the saiga is epic cool if you like the ak platform....or even if you dont. it gets style points your benelli, or your remington, or whatever, would not. and the range would be more fun with 20 round drum mags :D. number two, if you ever do have to defend your house, and you get charged with murder (happens unfortunately more often than you would think) the jury will be more forgiving if what they see has a wood stock and doesnt look as gnarly and beastly and war-y as the saiga.

HD shotgun? Same as my deer, rabbit, squirrel, pheasant, turkey hunting shotgun.

Rem 1100.

After 30 yrs. shooting it, I know it best.

Mossberg 930. I have the plain "Tactical" model not the SPX. 18.5 barrel. Very soft shooting auto loader, and shoots any type shells you feed it without a hitch.

I had the opportunity to shoot one of the new Mossberg 930's yesterday. I was impressed! The gun handles well, cycles easily and is VERY accurate, to boot!

Just for the heck of it, the owner let me shoot some 1 1/4 oz 3" magnum slugs through it. Recoil was there, but it was VERY manageable!

I like the gun a lot, and I do highly recommend it!

By the way...anyone got magazine tube retainer screws for a Model 11?

Seems kinda hoggish to have 2 of em. I think you should sell me one for what you paid.:D

I have two shotgun, but they are more of the tactical type a Benelli M1 8 shot semi-auto; and a Hawk 932 pump. The hawk is built like a tank and was cheap, new $210; and the Benelli M1 from what I can say about it is simply perfect. :D
