Selling guns: A tired old poll on a tired old subject

"C"-modified.

Overall quantity reduction acceptable. Didn't stay interested in the mil-surps as much as I originally guessed and turned a bale of them into a sporting clays O/U.

And, I'd likely turn 10 or so CZ-52s into a Baer Stinger - or something along those lines, if given the chance. Too bad I only have 4 from "back then".

Makes more room in the safe as well.

I'm somewhere between C and D. I don't have an emotional attachment to any of the guns I've gotten over the years. But the ones I do own fill a niche in some area of shooting I like to do.
So right now selling one would mean that I'd need to get another. But if I no longer felt the need for a certain type of shooting, I wouldn't have a problem getting rid of the gun/s that filled that niche.
I'm also starting to develop arthritis in my right wrist. What am I supposed to do when I can no longer shoot heavy caliber handguns? I can't see hanging them above the mantel and pointing them out to visitors while talking about the good old days.

Some guns just don't fit me for some reason. I accept that. In that case, why keep it? I have no room for safe queens or non-shooters. All of my guns are to either 1) defend myself, 2) provide enjoyment (through shooting of the thing).

I like buying and selling guns. but once i find that one that is perfect i got to keep it . My dad told me 15 years ago when i bought my first handgun after i bought a star 9mm that was a copy of a sig,226. that you get what you pay for.I didn't understand until i shot that gun and it constantly jammed what a p.o.s. ever since that i have either just waited to buy a good gun or bought a cheaper gun then traded off to get a better gun i wanted to begin with. Most guys i am in the army with buy a new car after returning from iraq. i bought more guns the wife doesn't care she tells me that if something happened icould sell them but so far nothing has happened .I am just glad colt brought the delta elite back out cause i really wanted one years ago i couldn't find one.

Kind of surprised by the poll. I'm a solid A. I've sold one gun, and only traded one, and the trade was a GP100 6" for a GP100 4" combat model. If I sold any of my current guns, I think I would regret it later.

The one I sold was a Calico .22LR. A unique gun, but jam prone.

I am kind of stingy with my money. I really look into something and make sure it is what I want before I shell out my hard earned money.

I've sold a lot of guns over the years, usually because they turned out to be not what I realllly wanted (tho I wanted them when I bought them) or there was a function issue, or I just wanted a new gun and didn't have the money ... my collection continues to grow, but occasionally I take a step back in order to take a step forward ... I do have guns I will never sell -- my 686+ comes to mind -- but most are living on borrowed time. I have never sold a gun just for the money, always to move to another gun ...

Guns come and go. Sometimes I have to trade off what I have for what I want, like food and electricity. One that I will not get rid of is the one that my father left to me when he died. A post war Colt Woodsman.

I'm mostly C with a bit of B and just a pinch of A.

Most guns I would sell to fund the purchase of another gun or new upgrades for my other guns. But, there are some guns that I wouldn't sell for any price.

My first .22 rifle that my parents gave me when I was a little squirt will never get sold. It will get passed down to my daughter though, and I hope she does the same one day.
I also wouldn't sell the first gun I bought on my own. It's nice having a few constant pieces around in an ever-changing collection.

Group A
Never sell a firearm! Period! No discussion. You will regret it.

This is how I feel, but not how life has worked out for me.

Group B
Only sell a firearm in dire circumstance. Such as needing the money for rent or medical bills. Exhaust all other avenues first. Any gun sold is a tragedy.

Yes, I still morn the sale of some of my firearms made only out of desparation. Someyimes, you have no other options.

Group C
Sure, sell if you want to, but only if you are using the funds to buy a better gun or multiple lesser guns. It is fun. As long as you end up with the same number of guns at the end of the day...or maybe even more.

Yeah, been there, done that, but some of my guns are far too 'personal' to for this.

Group D
They are just tools. Buy and sell them as you please and never look back.

If this is how you feel, we are done talking!

Group B/C for me. I buy all my firearms cause I want that particular gun, and plan to shoot them untill the fall apart, I dont buy them for their resale value. I have only ever sold one gun, and that was to help finance another gun purchase.

I'm in Group C, but if the money is going towards gun accessories I need or custom gunsmithing, I don't mind if I end up with less guns at the end of the day.

I think it's great that our hobby is loaded with goofs that buy every single gun their eyes come across and then end up selling them off to fund whatever is the next flavor of the month. It's these guys that keep good firearms in the used gun market for the rest of us to enjoy.
Yes, as a couple people have pointed out so far, thank goodness for us wishy washy gun buyers. Those of us in the C and D groups keep the used gun market alive. :)

between b and c. I love my guns, and will not get rid of them easily. But if a good deal came along i'd probably do it. But at the same time, i'll never NEVER NEVER EVER get rid of my USP. It's Perfect in every way and it was my first gun.

In theory, I'm a C.
In practice, I'm a D.

I have often sold two to buy one. Occasionally sold two and bought none.
But I tend to buy whatever appeals to me at the time--not an impluse buy, but I always have something I'm looking for. Currently, that is S&W N-frames.

For example, I've bought two M-25s in .45LC (in addition to one in 45acp) in the last three months, and committed to another yesterday. Do I need four N-frame .45s? No, not really. Will I end up selling at least one? Perhaps/probably.

I just bought my first N-frame .41 mag, 6". If I find a 4" tomorrow, I may buy it as well. And I may sell the 6", because (until/unless Texas passes Open Carry) a 4" is carry-able; a 6" less so. Or I may keep it; both have their place.

To facilitate all this, I have sold a number of pistols and rifles that I do not shoot or carry regularly. This has allowed me to experience a number of different calibers/platforms that I would otherwise be unable to do, and also to rid myself of those that did not meet my expectations (for example, all of my .40 caliber pistols, three .44 SPLs, several Glocks and four Kel-Tecs).

However much I love owning & using them, my guns are material objects.
Not even actually a vital necessity at that.
So "D" for me.

Yup, that's about where I'm at as well. I've experienced all of the Ruger Mk. IIs I care for, and now a few S&W revolvers in .38, .357, and .45 are taking their place (hopefully permanently, or at least for a really long time). My one and only Taurus (905 snubbie in 9mm) will probably be leaving soon, too. I had a Keltec P11 and a S&W SW9VE, which both made room for a Beretta 92FS (which will probably make way for something else when/if my brother buys it from me).

There are a few I would never consider selling, or maybe if I was truly desperate and I was out of options.

Ah....

Well, I voted D

Because I like the idea of that sort of freedom of mind.

Although, I'm really more like A.... Because I cant find a reason to sell any of my guns, they all work good enough. and I've become attached to them...

Now if I HAD to, like some crazy life change and that was the ONLY place I could get the money and.... I HAD to.

Or if I really really really wanted some awesome gun that was alot of money and I knew the only way I could really get it any time this year was to sell one of my slightly less reliable cheaper guns that I could let live as a memory. (and even that is a stretch, I'd rather just wait till I had the cash, but maybe if it was a one time opportunity for a trade or something. lol) The only guns I can truly say I would never get rid of are... the guns given to me by my Grandpa. And any other family guns I might receive some day.
