This has been discussed before and I thought I would bring it up again. Only this time with a little more detail. :)

What is you opinion on selling firearms?

It seems people tend to fall into one of four categories. Those being...

Group A
Never sell a firearm! Period! No discussion. You will regret it.

Group B
Only sell a firearm in dire circumstance. Such as needing the money for rent or medical bills. Exhaust all other avenues first. Any gun sold is a tragedy.

Group C
Sure, sell if you want to, but only if you are using the funds to buy a better gun or multiple lesser guns. It is fun. As long as you end up with the same number of guns at the end of the day...or maybe even more.

Group D
They are just tools. Buy and sell them as you please and never look back.

I personally am firmly rooted in Group C. I kind of enjoy refining my collection and I know I have bought some guns in the past that just do not suit my current tastes.

Never, never, never...

Never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never sell a gun! (unless it's a Glock...but in that case you should have never bought it to begin with)

I voted never. I had to sell my whole collection off a few years ago and for a no good reason. I'll never do it again. I also did it when I was "ballin" (lots of money) thinking I could replace them, no problem. Well I'm currnetly a victim of the econemy and a new gun is no where in the near future. Looks like it will be my Sig and P22 for a while :o

I am between B and C.

My collection goals are to get at least one prime example of each handgun that I am interested in and am willing to wait a long time and look for quite a while before I finally make a purchase. that being said I tend to hold onto any handgun that I do eventually find.

Most of the ones i like aren't made anymore so I never know when I will find one again if I sell it.

Back in 1988 i had heart bypass surgery .Had over 60 hand guns in my collection .sold all but a few to get by .I am glad i had something to live on . money well spent in my early years .Some were replaced not a great number , But such is life .live it up. :D

I've had a few that I sold and a couple I'd never sell. It just depends on if I really need the money and do I have a gun I'm willing to part with. I had a gun that was junk and I had another that was good but was a real pain to field strip and had more recoil than I liked for the caliber. For whatever reason you may grow to dislike a gun, get rid of it. Why keep something you don't like? Someone else might.

I fall right into "Group C". I go through quite a bit of firearms. I buy/trade for one, shoot it for a while, get bored with it and sell/trade it off for another one...it's a nice circle. Lets me get a feel for lots of different things out there that I wouldn't be able to afford just buying it. There's only a couple that I have keep and I will never get rid of.

At one time I was in group A until I found myself actually being in the position of group B. I always regretted seeing them go, but at the end of the day they are still just things, and things can be replaced. There are things that are more important than just things.

I voted C I have sold guns for other guns, but I am very selective to whom I sell my guns to. I sold a Taurus Millenium to a friend at work, after a year or so, he was selling it to a friend of another guy we work with. The guy I sold the gun to wanted me to write up a receipt for the sale to the next guy. I told him that there was no way in hell I was going to do that after I did not have the gun in my hands for over a year. Like I said, I am very selective to whom I sell guns to.

I trade stuff around to get new firearms that fill me current needs. I have a couple times even traded multiple firearms to get 1 really nice one. I'm in the process of selling a nice sig P220 and I already sold my HK custom combat. I'm looking to replace both of these with a STI executive.

Plus sometimes your needs change. For the last 10 years I have did a lot of prairie dog shooting. I have several dedicated dog guns. It's looking like I may not get to go shooting every year anymore. If that's the case I could see selling 1 or 2 of them and getting something I could get more use out of. You always say you'll go again if you take a year of 2 off, just doesn't always happen though.

I would say to think real hard before selling any gun.

There were great reasons you bought it in the first place.

And once it's gone,it's gone.

In the case of treasured firearms,it can be a hole in your collection you can never replace.

Without a doubt I'm in group 1. I've thought about selling a gun a few times, but I can never bring myself to do it. Not even my 20 gauge New England Arms break over shotgun.

C

The older I get....well anyway I made some ill informed purchases, especially shotguns, and have sold some of those off to upgrade. I can see downsizing as I get deeper into my dotage but that will entail improving quality at the expense of quantity.

I sold most of my collection a couple of decades ago, and some of it is now nearly irreplaceable. :(

Now, I don't buy anything but quality handguns. Even if a gun is a "cheapo" (i.e. S&W Sigma, Bersas, etc.) you won't get enough out of it to make it worth your while to part with it - may as well keep it.

I may sell most of my guns when I'm near death. But I'll have the Smith & Wessons buried with me.... :D
