Security Six or S&W 66-1?

If you're buying it to shoot and keep forever, I'd say the Ruger, just for the price difference. You can get some Wolff springs and do a little polishing and have a nice trigger. And have some money left over for some ammo.

I'd say the Ruger

They stopped making them a while ago and their prices are starting to go up based on the solidness of their design.
The ruger will better stand a steady diet of magnum loads and the smith will get you a better trigger.
Both are fine weapons.

Both are great revolvers. The Security Six was built from day one to handle .357 magnums, whereas the 66 was adapted from the .38 special K-frame. So if you like to shoot a lot of full-blown .357, the Security Six will be better suited for the task. On the other hand, the S&W has a much larger after market; i.e. grips, sights, etc.

Take these factors into consideration, and try each gun in your hand. Like I said, they're both great. You just need to decide what your expectations are and what you prefer.

For what it's worth I have a S&W K-Frame and a Security Six. I like the trigger on the S&W more. But I shoot the Ruger more accurately.

Which one I bought would depend upon intended use. You say "shooter."

If you're planning to shoot thousands of rounds annually, hot loads, lots of rapid fire double action work, I'd go with the Ruger.

But if you're simply saying "shooter" as opposed to a safe queen, if you're like 99.9% of the rest of us gun owners, and you'll likely only shoot it a couple of hundred rounds a month, if that, I'd go with the Smith.

I own a 66-1. I stay away from lightweight, high velocity bullets. There have been issues with 125 grain magnum loads. I use 158 grain bullets loaded to 38 special velocities. That's also something you don't have to worry about with the Ruger.

Had a Smith.......

......and still own a couple Rugers (Speed Six and Security Six, 2 3/4 barrels).

Both will last for years though the Ruger will hold up to magnums better. Heavy duty revolvers.

The Ruger triggers can be made nicer if the spring kits are still available for them. Both of mine have them. Purchased the firearms with them in. But even with those kits, the Sixes still don't have triggers as smooth as the K frame had. Gave my stepson a blued Speed Six that didn't have the kit. Man that's a horrible trigger!
