Second Amendment Stance of Presidential Candidates for 2016

It bears mentioning that Trump published The America We Deserve in 2000, in which he advocated for waiting periods and a ban on "assault weapons."

Promising to support things is easy. Building a record of such support is something altogether different.

In 2000 my 73 year old father was fervently anti-gun. Later that year he had a run in with a motorcycle gang at a campsite. Soon after that he obtained his conceal carry permit. My father was the one that sent me the link.

The fact that trump states that he carries and his unequivical representations within his position paper makes me believe that his position has evolved over time.

Of course, his " I'm just going to do it" will wear thin. His economic position paper will be up in a few weeks. We will see if there is more there than a very smart man with a Napoleonic ego.

Let's not forget that Donald Trump was a Democrat from 2001 to 2009. That wasn't too long ago! And, that would possibly explain his position on advocating the AW ban.

The bottom line on Trump is that he is an opportunist. If it will get him more power, more votes, more political capital by advocating for banning "high powered" rifles and "automatic" handguns, he wouldn't hesitate to come out swinging hard for gun bans. However, the one good thing about Trump is that he could probably care less about guns either way and truly would focus on the thing he might be good at - growing the economy. Whereas Hillary or Biden really would want to push an anti-gun agenda; Trump probably doesn't want to be bothered with it. Still, there are about 14 people I'd rather vote for in the primaries over Trump.

Don't forget Kasichs vote in favor of the AWB also. Now, he has a pretty good record of 2A support.
While I know it can happen, it just seems fishy to me for men of their age to change their stance on this topic.

I'm not incredibly concerned over politicians statements from years ago. The fact is that even if they personally are not crazy about 2A issues, they do know what their supporters want. A lot of them did not understand that "reasonable" meant step one on the slippery slope. The "assault weapons" hysteria was created for the sole purpose of preying on ignorance of the general pulbic. The general atmosphere was different 20 years ago. While some are less enthusiastic supporters than others, I really don't see any of the republican candidates as true antis except Petaki. I don't see any of them advancing an anti gun agenda.
On the democrat side, every one of the major possible candidates is rabidly anti gun except Webb.
