Lots of folks saying XD (and M&P) is better, but nobody saying why (except the trigger).

I have experience on both.

Both are very good handguns. The difference comes in the features.

The Springfield XD will have a better trigger out of the box, has a grip safety, loaded chamber indicator, striker indicator, and ambi mag release.

By no means is the SD9 an inferior gun, it just has less features. Think of it like comparing 2 vehicles; one has leather seats, power windows, ABS brakes, etc while the other does not. Both will do the same task.

I had a M&P 9C, two FS 9s, two 9 Shields and an SD9VE. The SD9VE is more accurate than all of them and far more accurate than the FS9s I had. Yes I had the latest barrels, I didn't need to get use to the trigger and I tried multiple brands and weights of ammo. I currently have two M&P FS45s that are tack drivers and far more accurate than any of the M&P 9s I've owned.

I've also owned multiple XD/M 9s. They're reliable and accurate firearms. I'd go with an XD/M or SD9VE, but I'm use to and can shoot all types of triggers equally as well.

I'd have to vote for the XD, especially if your gonna use it as a carry weapon.

I personally don't own a M&P 9mm, but my friend that I always shoot with does. I own the XD service. We usually go to the range together and we go head to head on his dueling tree.

I cannot speak for how well he cleans and maintains he guns, but I know I'll clean mine about every 1000 rounds or every other range trip whichever comes first. With that said I'm on my first sleeve of spp in my tenth brick. That means that I have fired at least 8000 rounds of hand loads, and I know a case of blazer brass over the course of the last 15 months. Most shots were in rapid succession on the dueling tree without a single malfunction. I can think of three times my friends M&P malfunctioned one failure to eject and two failure to feeds.

Now given the shot counts when he had his issues I definitely wouldn't call the M&P an unreliable gun, I would just have to say that MY XD with MY hand loads is more reliable then HIS M&P with FACTORY ammo. (Big surprise, right )

My reason for choosing the XD comes down to the features and feel for me. I love having the grip safety, it just gives me piece of mind when I carry. Though it can be a pain unloading the chambered round. (the grip safety must be compressed to rack the slide) and the XD just points better for me.

To me the most important thing in a defensive handgun is how it naturally points in YOUR HANDS. Handle the gun pick a spot (safely) close your eyes and bring the gun up. Then open you shooting eye (without adjusting the gun) and see how the sights line up. If they both line up for you then go with whichever one has what you want.;)

I've shot both and yes the XD is worth the extra money. Both are reliable and accurate but if you plan on shooting a lot, the trigger on the Smith is heavy, long, gritty and a little spongey. Hard to explain it, but it's the worse trigger I have encountered on a handgun.

As long as HS produkt insists on that goofy grip safety I'll never own one.

My #1 choice when wanting a new plastic HD pistol last fall was a CZ p-09. It was a tough decision between that and the M&P pro.

I shot a SD40VE at the range last Tuesday, the owner also had a G23 and G27. I shot the SD40 first because he was bragging about the apex stuff he'd dropped in it. I was for sure one of the best little M&P triggers I'd shot. I beat the plates down better with it than I did with the stock 23. I was kinda impressed, and have thought about getting one because I ditched my 229, but still have over 1500 rounds and a set of 40 dies. But then again I really want a G40 for my woods gun.
