I responded to a facebook gun group add a couple weeks ago about selling Grandpas old hunting rifles. I went over to see what he had and to my amazement there sat a 1949 model 70 in .270 and a 1959 model 70 .243 standard!! Picked them up for $300 each.......

Thanks! I'm super excited to have them, I have always had model 70's but these are my first pre 64. Gotta say I'm in love!

I've been doing a little research on that standard .243. Seems to be a hard one to find, most are feather weight. I had a Facebook friend send me his load data for his stnd .243, sure looking forward to seeing how it shoots.

Some of my favorite rifles have been the late 1980's model 70's. They are very affordable and underrated. I have one now in .270 and it is a great shooter. I payed $600 for it with a leupold vxII 3x9 scope on it and it's in mint condition. Love the m70's.

This grandpa did for sure. Both triggers are set at 2lbs 3 oz with no creep and a clean break so hopefully it's a good indicator of how they will perform

Its was a score. The Fellow selling them didnt know much about firearms, especially Winchesters. I couldnt drive fast enough over there to check them out!

WHY NOT ME !!!

I really like pre 64's for hunting. Over the past 45 years I have found and purchased strictly for hunting use, a 243, 270, pre war '06 and the last one a 300 H&H mag. That one was a fair price at $800.00.

You really did good on your two.

Thanks Win71! I bet these rifles have a few stories to tell. The kid I bought them from said his grandpa was an avid hunter and loved his rifles. I'm glad to give them a good home and continue the hunt.

I never find deals like this. Most people in my area know guns or atleast use the net to see what theyre woth then add 20% go figure:rolleyes: very nice indeed!

I sold this standard 270 a while back for $1350....You did good....

Thanks Upstate! That is a beautiful rifle keg, I have to say this is one of my greatest finds to date. I have a love for the m70's but never could afford the older stuff. Can't wait to get some optics mounted and see how they do!

I see these deals pop up in my rural area on occasion. I am torn about what to do. On one hand, I always love to get a good deal. On the other hand, I hate taking advantage of someone just because they aren't gun people and don't know what they have. Occasionally, what they ask for is just too little and I tell them that. Sometimes they say they don't care, they just need them gone. That makes things easier.

Not saying that you did anything wrong, so please don't take my comments as such.

No offense taken here whatsoever Mountainbear. I am ok with the deal for a couple reasons, I payed his asking price and they are coming to a good home where they will be appreciated. A fellow does leave a situation like that feeling a little greedy but I can't likely tell sellers or retailers that I would like to pay more for there things to calm my soul. My wallet couldn't sustain it!
