Scope???

Me too--I'm of age where the eyesight is going faster than I would like--I've even had to resort to mounting scopes on my pistols and revolvers since I can't see either front or back irons in any kind of focus.

I wouldn't say that Far East scopes have the best light gathering. Meopta, Ziess, Swaro, Khales, S&B, Leica, NF, Trijicon etc are all better than any of the Asian imports that I've seen.

I like the Vortex line as well, but personally I'd need some more info before making my own recommendation.

You mentioned 1K would be possible- but didn't say under what circumstances.
Is it a range, with known distances/targets?
Or, is it wide open spaces where you need to range your target?

Makes a big difference.

If you're shooting at a range with known distances to the targets, there is no need for a FFP/Mil/Mil optic (FFP= First Focal Plane).

If you're not, then this becomes very relevant. Ranging with SFP reticles needs to be done at a specific magnification, while with FFP it can be done at any. The downside to this is that the reticle grows in size along with magnification, and with a high power scope the crosshair will obscure more of the target at long range than that of a similar SFP scope. A mildot reticle (and corresponding turrets) makes estimating range easier based on target size, and shots can be made using holdover instead of needing to mess with the turrets if desired.

There is a substantial cost difference between FFP and the more common SFP (Second Focal Plane) optics. If you don't need FFP, then the dollars can be put into higher quality glass (or ammo, upgrades, or left in the piggy bank).

If you're not familiar with SFP/FFP scopes, you should watch this:

Want to thank ALL who chimed in with advice & comments. "W/o pix it didn't happen!" Hence this post.

Got the RPR from the LGS Wed. Finally got out to the range today. A little bit of wind but nothing serious. Started at 100 yd; also shot one 5-shot group at 200 yd.

'Scope I chose was the Vortex Viper PST 6-24. Not the best 'scope in the world, but pretty decent.

Note: the 200 yd. group was shot for group--did not adjust the 'scope except for parallax from the 100 yd setting. It was a REALLY great group until the 5th shot!!

You will appreciate Vortex Warranty. I sent one back last Monday because wind age turrets were not working. I had a new one back in 3 days after they got it saying I had over tightened the rings. Five days and no questions asked.

XTR and 20 MOA base

Here's another vote for the XTR Burris and 1K should get you a 6-24x with parallex adj and rezero turrets. The 4-20x (is that right, 'cause I thought the next step down was 4-16x) is another good option.

BTW, I've got no trouble getting a .308 with a 20 MOA base "down" to 100 and back "up" to 1000, provided I zero for 600. Thus "on" in about the middle of the adjusment range, with the 30mm tube I've got room to adjust both ways.

The 6.5 is even flatter, I'd think you'll have no problem if everything is aligned on the rifle.

I'd suggest that any scope you get, it has parallex adjustment.
