ok guys taxes are filed and in two weeks ill be in the market for a scope. i had planned the vx3 in 6.5x20x50 for a while now, in the interests of possibly saving some money ive been looking at the vortex viper in the same magnification.

the leupold i should be able to get for a 800 or less through a friend. the viper is only 549.00 msrp. ill be buying new 30mm rings and a 4'' sunshade as well.

it would seem vortex has the better warranty as they have a no bs no matter the reason warranty. leupold has a good warranty from what i hear, but i sounds like they are more concerned with manufacurers defects than fixing it when you trip and drop the rifle on the scope. ( not that any of us would ever ever have that happen:D)

ive heard it both ways that one is better than the other. i have yet to own a leupold. i do however have a vortex diamondback that i am quite pleased with. again though, i dont have a equal mag. leupold to compare it to.

im hoping to get opinions on both sides. vortex guys , the leupold guys , and the guys who own both.

I've got a Leupold 3-9x40...nice scope

I also have the Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 and it's also a nice scope

for the money...overall performance vs money...I recommend the Vortex

For what it's worth:
I have both Leupold and Vortex. The old, "you can't go wrong either way..." comes into play here. That said, I have been greatly enjoying using my (Vortexes, Vortexs, Vortices, plural Vortex scopes?) these days.

I have never had to make use of either companies warrantee, but both are reputed to be pretty comprehensive.

Vortex's 6-24x50 makes for a pretty piece of glass! This Winter I have been working out to 400-600 yards with it and I love mine.

My Leupolds are a little older vintage, work great; however, for me, I have been buying other brands in recent years. YMMV

i was dead set on the leupold until i really started looking at the vortex. unless i can get get an extreme deal on the leupold im really leaning to the vortex. i had planned to compare them at bps today but they do not carry the viper line. ill try sportsmans tomorrow as well as cabelas. if the glass is as good i may just go for the viper. im really drawn to the no bs warranty.

I own both Vortex and Leupold, both have a great warranty. I just put a 6.5-20X50 Viper on my Grendel, I really like it but I well wait until the end of this coming summer before I pass final judgement.

The Viper has a better price, the Leupold is made in the USA. It can be a difficult choice, support a local (to me) company or save money? I know a few guys that work at Leupold and even they like the Viper line from Vortex.

see thats the thing, im all about supporting american made, but if foreign made is more ready to support their product, they just may have my bussiness.

I also have both and last Nov picked up a vortex viper not mounted it yet as I am customizing a rifle and not done yet. As I have looked through the viper it seems quite nice I can not tell you how it is going to hold up on a 06 but the lupy has but again it is also a 3x9 and shot after shot it doesn't move.... I as well was looking to the viper as to give it a go.... and time will tell what the viper has is easy turrets with pull up zero and side focus is what I am willing to give a go and like my nikons, supersnipers, lupys in higher X's mag have the side focus which, for me is better than the front ajust.

Im am also on the market for a new scope for coyote hunting. It will be going on a Savage 22-250.

I was looking at Simmons scopes. Anyone have any opinions on Simmons scopes? And would recommend one?

Compared glass today, couldnt belive how much more light the vortex gathered vs the leupold. It was like night and day

I say get the Leupold, Its an Old American Company, not one of these here today gone tomarrow, brands that ends up being assembled in a Chinese Sweat Shop.

JMO, Vortex Bad, Leupold Good :)

It isn't quite quality "scope time" for my 5R/.308 yet but I've been giving Vortex a long hard look. Been going back and forth between Nightforce and Vortex.

according to everything ive seen vortex is a usa made product.

kmaysabob look it up. The company that owns them is in the US but the Vortex scopes are made in the Philipenes. There was a thread on this forum about them, and on a Cabelas forum. But you should get what you want and not worry about what other people think. Its your money, you earned it.

Check out Natchez and the Weaver Super Slam as well as the Euro Slam, great glass and a great price right now. I just bought a Super Slam and the more I shoot it, the more I like it.

Yes, the Vortex Vipers are made in the Philippines. That said, who cares, it's still a way better scope than the VX-3, with a better warranty, and a better scope. It would be my choice hands down. I don't so much care where a product is made as long as it works.

I'd say,Look at the Sightron SIII scopes as well as the Weaver Super Slams before you buy a Vortex Viper. You won't regret it.
Long range supply has some great prices on Sightron's,and you can get the Weaver's at a good price from Natchez.

I've heard the Viper PST is a great scope, but I've never been able to find a dealer that actually has one to look at.

Vortex! no weavers,or other crap, Leupold or Vortex was the Op's question.
I like 'em both really,,,,,,, Vortex would add to the extra money to load for it, and Leupold would be cool too. ( I'm no real help I guess:o)
