Scope input for next rifle

While nothing is wrong with the 2.5-10 and 3.5-10 power scopes you mentioned, I think the 2.5-8X36 VX-3 is about the perfect hunting scope. It weighs in around 14oz, with the smaller objective you can mount it lower, and the power range works well with as far as I'm going to attempt a shot with a .30-06 rifle. They run new about $350 online, check one out I'm sure you will not be dissappointed.

I'm not necessarily looking for the highest priced glass I can afford. I'd be happier getting the most value for the dollar. I haven't had a chance to look at the new Redfield's yet but it sounds like they're worth taking a look at.

Yes the new Redfield's are worth looking at. I've purchased two 4-12X40's this year. Good scopes but not in the league with Leupold VX-II and above, but then again they are half the price. They are servicable hunting scopes, and I'd recommend sticking with the straight duplex, I've got one of the accurange reticles and really don't care for it.

Right now I have a Weaver K4 4X on my Remington 700 VLS in .308. I had a Leupold VXII 3-9X40 on it previously but as I said, I only used the 3X setting. In truth, I wanted the Buckmaster 4X but they quit making them a few years ago. The Weaver has been very good.

Palmetto, all of mine are post-buy out...so the good ones IMO and pretty much everyone else's. I describe Redfield's as Leupolds' generic brand, exact same stuff just stamped differently....similar to how you can get generic drugs at the pharmacy sometimes, exact same drug just generic brand. In my opinion there is no better hunter's scope out there that is as good, as affordable and holds zero as well.

Redfields aren't bad for the money, but you can do better. I bought a couple to try on some rifles and they have some features I like. They are simply not in the same league as a Conquest or VX-3. Not even comparble to a Nikon or VX-2.

The Redfields are very much comparable to the Leupold VX-1 or Rifleman scopes, except they are priced better. If looking at a Leupold Rifleman vs Redfied I'd go Redfield in a second.

They are lightweight, have good eye relief and the adjustment knobs work smoothly. The glass is just not clear enough for my however.

I'd never lump a VX-1 with a Rifleman. There is a significant quality jump between the two. I love Leupolds (I own many) but I wouldn't recommend the Rifleman to anyone. It's an $80 quality scope with a $180 price tag - the extra $100 going to fund that famous Leupold warranty. If you want a lower-end Leupold, spend a few extra dollars and get the VX-1.

Leupold 2.5-8x36mm vx-3 or Zeiss Conquest 3x9x40mm..Of the two, I have both and prefer the Zeiss by far, especially at dawn and dusk...

The rifleman and VX-1 are essentialy the same scope. Leupold does not offer any custom options on the Rifleman. For less money the Redfield is better than either.

Here is a good discussion on the different Leupold models

According to the Leupold rep the new Redfields are essentially VX-2's without he bells and whistles. Ive got both, and to my eyes they are identical, but a definite step blow my VX-3's.

I think for 90% of guys that hunt, they are more than adequate. I took an older VX-III 3-10 x 50 off my 25-06 and put a 3-9X50 Redfield on last season, to test it out. It was easy to zero, adjustments were accurate, and it held its zero during out 4 month season . It was used by myself and several guests to take a dozen or so deer, several in very low light, since we can hunt up to 1 hour after legal sunset in S.C.

Its not as clear as my VX3's or a Ziess or Swarovski, but it doesnt cost as much either. For a guy with a limited budget, I think they are about as good as you can get for the price.
