Savage MKII FV-SR

What's everyones opinion on the Savage MK-II blot action .22s? Specifically the little 16" barreled FV-SRs model?

I was going to treat myself to a new Air rifle with both .177 and .22 barrels. But then I saw one of the Savage FVSRs at our LGS today and it's only $25 more than what I was going to spend on the air rifle. I have PILES of various .22 LR, And its already threaded for the YHM mite suppressor I will be getting this year for a couple of my SR .22 pistols.

The only Savage gun I've ever owned or even shot is my old Savage 520 shotgun. It seems like a pretty solid little rifle. The air rifle was going to be used for barn varmints at our stable and sometimes squirrel hunting.

Know that I am a bit biased on these as I have owned a number of them, that have the same action. In fact, I will likely purchase this exact model, very soon. I guess, the bottom line for me is to say that this selection will likely, exceed, your expectation. I wish I could give you something to look out for, but really can't.

They are a great rifle. Very accurate. I have shot one with a can on it. I think Savage makes one of the most accurate 22 out of the box. The trigger is outstanding.

I had toyed with the idea of waiting till next weekend and trying to find one, when I go to the gun show to look for black powder guns. But now that I think of it, I cant remember the last time I saw a NIB anything fro a good deal at the gun show. Those are pretty much only good for hard to find, good used and oddball items.

Don't know what these should sell for but they have it for $229.68 NIB Sound like a good price? It's the last one they have, and they'll hold it for me till tomorrow. He said they've been selling these like crazy. I think I may go warm up the truck ;)
 
Have one. Mine wears a Liberty Kodiak TL can--and it is crazy
quiet and one ragged hole accurate at 25 yds.

Unlike most pistols, it will not be sub-sonic with regular 22 LR
ammo. Mine is most accurate with Aguilla 39 gr, but CCI sub-sonic
is almost as good.

They come with just a kinda chepo hard plastic one. Not a big issue for me as I'm already making home made "mcMillian style spacers to go with a black rubber pad I think will work nicely.

And the stock is going to get entirely replaced in a month or so with a boyds:D
 
Horrible stock, mediocre magazines, but a good barrel length (and factory threaded for the tube-guys), good scope base, and decent trigger.

I sold mine because I found a compact .22 I liked better (stock, mags, and came with sights).... and I don't own suppressors.
 
I have the mkii f and its been good gun. Out of box the day I got it was shootn cans and never had to adjust the sights. The only problem I had is when I put scope mounts and scope my scope wouldnt adjust low enough to get where the gun was shootn and had to get a egw 20moa rail. Now its good to go

Yes, I suspected as much as the last MK-II came with the same "plastic" butt-plate. Even before I ordered it, I had plans for a Boyds thumbhole. Once past that, the rifle is fantastic to work with. .... :)

For me that's pretty much it. I'm a fairly big guy @ 205 6'2"-3". Not sure of my exact LOP but I have a 32" draw length with a bow.

BUt I'm in to process of making stackable rubber spacers similar to a mcmillin stock to help until I order one of the Boyds Tac stocks.
 
Well I pulled the trigger on it :D I just got home (our LGS opens on Sunday for a few hours after normal church services) So I went and picked it up:

Here she is after I tossed on a BSA classic I had laying around and one of my Harris BRM-S bi-pods....Looks pretty nice I think:D



I have a pretty wide variety of ammo to test with it. I may take it to the shop Tomorrow and try her out.

Hows the LOP feel when shouldered? A 32" draw length is pretty long. Mine is 29" and the stock on my mkii is just right if not a little short.
 
I may be crazy, but it feels like it should be 1&1/2-2" longer LOP than it is for me. They had a semi auto savage right next to it with the boyds tacticool. It felt pretty comfortable, so that's what it will eventually have on it.
 
I love mine. Its one of my favorite .22s, maybe my most favorite .22 bolt action rifle. I use a Tactical Innovations Quest Suppressor with it and its as quiet as any other suppressed .22 rifle I have ever used.

If you have not tried the CCI Super Quiet (SQ) ammo, give it a shot (pun intended). When folks say that all they heard was the firing pin strike on the case and no sound from the muzzle at all - that is the case with this set up.

When I fired the first SQ through my set up I was sure that the bullet did not clear the barrel. Well it did, but did so with practically no sound. It is much quieter than any pellet gun I have ever fired.

Reference the butt plate. It is crappy, like the stock, it is very "slick" plastic that does not stay in the shoulder well. The stock is overall VERY light. About as light as any stock can get. That in and of itself is not a distractor to me as I wanted a lightweight set up, and if I were to replace the stock with a Boyd's or something similar I would be adding weight back that I did not want in the first place.

I'll have to look into the TI suppressors. I was just going to go with the MITE do to familiarity and the LGS stocks them. But I was also considering a Gemtech. I want one dedicated for the rifle so I don't have to share between it and the rimfire pistols.

Guess I'll wander over to the NFA forum and ask some SS Qs;)
