Can I get Savage 10FP in 25-06 or 270Win. Need a new cutover rifle
Has anyone tried one or have one if so what about the proformance.
Any info would help in the choice of this rifle. Current cost, barrel needs to be 26''. Going to be for coyotes, deer & hogs to about around 400 yds.

THANKS for ANY help.

Ahh, the cutover rifle. Or what we call, hearabouts, the beanfield rifle.

Betwixt the .25-06 and the .270, either will work fine. So, it boils down to personal preference. The .270 is a winner, that's for sure and has a proven record at such things. On the other hand, the .25-06 has been around longer and also has a proven track record. The .270 uses heavier bullets and might buck the wind a bit better, but the .25-06 goes faster by a slim margin.

If you asked my brother-in-law, he'd tell you to get the .270 as a beanfield rifle. He's got a fine, custom Remington 700 that I've seen him take some wonderful long range shots and hit with it. If you ask me, I'd tell you to get the .25-06, simply because it's my favorite small bore caliber.

But really, it boils down to your own preference. Sometimes it is fun to agonize over the caliber of the next rifle, and I see that you've got a tough choice ahead of you.

The 10FP is a great rifle...
Why not get it in .308?

The .270 is a tad faster, but you've got much more variety in terms of bullet selection (if you handload) or factory ammo (if you don't) in .308...

Oldsap makes an excellent point. Not being that familiar with Savage rifles, that hadn't occurred to me.

The second thought that he prompted was: The .270 win is also a long action cartridge.

OK Guys I'm confused is this 10fp a special order or something.
After alittle more search some people have this rifle in 25-06 & 270 alike.
So is the 10serious long action & the 12 serious short action.?

What I'm looking for is a varmint like rifle / Beanfield gun in 25-06 or 270
medium heavy barrel like them both best deal wins. Got SAVAGE on my mind.

10 short action 110 long action
11 short action 111 long action
12 short action
16 short action 116 long action

I would get the 10FP in .308 or the 12 LRH or LRP in .260

Savage makes a rifle, "Long Range Hunter" I believe, that comes in some serious Long Range calibers. go to Savage.com and check 'em out dude.:)

I own a couple of Savages, but haven't perused their extensive lineup...
What you're looking for is a hunting rifle- with a heavy, varmint or bull contour barrel.

They're kind of mutually exclusive.

There's no need for a heavy barrel on a hunting rifle. One shot, or two or three- and done. Barrel doesn't heat up and string shots; so no need to carry the extra weight of a heavy barrel for no reason. Hence, most hunting rifles have factory contour barrels for light weight. The accuracy of a cold-bore shot is good enough from a lightweight contour.

Now, I'm not saying that heavier contour barrels aren't usually more accurate because of better harmonics, I'm saying that the better accuracy is incremental, and while it's important to a target shooter- not so much for a hunter that just needs to hit the kill zone.

If you want a dual-purpose rifle, then get a heavy barrel stick. But you're more likely to find it listed as a "tactical" or "target" model, rather than a "hunting" rifle.

I believe the Savage Long-Range Hunter series is named because of the calibers (such as .338 LM , 6.5 CM, and .300 WM) and do not have varmint contour barrels. Could be wrong- tho...

The .25-06 is available in the 11/111 Long Range Hunter, which is a rifle set up for the cutovers and the beanfields. It's also available in a number of calibers to include 7mm Rem Mag, and 6.5X284 Norma, among others. Unfortunately, the .270 Winchester is not one of those calibers.

The .270 Winchester is available in 27 different models, none of which seem to include a heavy barrel model. Still, that is a premier long range cartridge and should serve in nearly any guise.

I've got a 110 FLP 25/06. It's a tack driver now,but I had a major copper fouling problem with it when it was new.It took several weeks of fire lapping and cleaning to get it right, but it was worth the effort.

Tx hillbilly thats a fine rifle there.Would love to have a 25-06 shoot like that.
Dont think I can aford one that nice. I have miles of cutover property to hunt & My 25 is in need of a barrel bad,I would be in heaven with a rig like that. Thanks for sharing:D

Savage will chamber a 110 action for you in the cartridge of your choice but you're going to pay for it. I inquired about them setting up a clone of the Model 10 Precision Carbine in 7mm08, they would do it in 4 weeks and it would cost me $1,200.00 their price, plus shipping and FFL Transfer fees. By comparison I paid about $700 for the .308 Precision Carbine.

BigP,If you have a rifle now,why not just get a new custom barrel for it.

A new barrel is a lot cheaper than a new rifle, and you'll get the same results from it.
That's what I love about Savage rifles,I can change barrels/calibers in just a few minutes out in my shop with a couple of handtools. The only thing you need is an Action Wrench, and a Barrel Nut Wrench, some Go/No Go gauges.

Ditto.
Buy an action for $350 from Northland Shooters Supply (or a "donor" rifle), screw on the barrel of your choice, drop it in the stock of your choice.

Far cheaper, and a lot faster, than having Savage do it for you- with your choice of barrels. Not that the Savage factory barrels aren't OK- they are, just more options...

tx hillbilly I have a Ruger MKII With about 3000 rounds down the pipe.
It has a very nice trigger.I have had remmy built in 300win mag.
I've heard the MKII's can be a pain & I have'nt done the home work yet.

I really enjoy the 25-06 easy to load too, fast, flatshooting & I dont need the 300 mag inside 400yds. May check around & see if the old Ruger & a barrel job/stock would be worth while.Well what do Ya'll think?
would it make a 1'' gun?

BigP,Just about any barrel mfg will make you a barrel for your Ruger MkII. You'd just need to have it installed and headspaced by a gunsmith.

A nice custom barrel will run you $250-??? depending on the mfg and the exact barrel that you are wanting.Check with a local gunsmith and see what they would charge you for installing and headspacing a barrel.
You can order the barrel directly from the barrel maker,or have the gunsmith order what you want.
